It s been awhile since I needed to borrow a cup of flour from a neighbor. But May, to me, is the launch of lending-and-borrowing season.
It s all part of the outdoor party scene, of course. Perhaps I have the tendency to barge into other people s affairs, but my white folding chairs have held more strangers posteriors than I can imagine.
For starters, a dear friend each summer borrows them for her neighborhood block party. I have about a dozen of these chairs. This friend is a super-organized, conscientious sort.
I never got around to putting my name on the seat bottoms, so she put her name on all of them to ensure their safe return. When other people borrow them now, I just tell them that all the chairs marked Carol are mine.
Who s Carol? they ask, slightly confused.
The joke in my family is that I am constantly borrowing ice from people before a party or holiday gathering. Our ice-maker has been broken for about two decades, and I never think to make a bunch of cubes ahead of time in those annoying little trays that never work properly.
We buy bagged ice for the beverage tubs and coolers, of course, but I have a weird thing about putting that ice in a drinking glass.
So, last minute, I ask people to bring some ice from their freezer, and then I make a mad dash to my mother s to borrow as if I actually plan to return it some more.
This has gone on for so long that one relative years ago started asking me, Anything we can bring besides ice?
I also have two large party tables that, I believe, have seen two parties in two weeks. I told the first family of borrowers to offer them to the people down the street for their party the next weekend.
I have outdoor tablecloths for those tables, too, but those were returned to me after party No. 1. But the tables are still out there, probably having a good time.
Of course, some friends who used to borrow my chairs now rent them from a business, like any mature adult, but what fun is that? Lending and borrowing reconnects people and allows me to offer party advice even when I m not asked.
I have lent people my big porch ferns; my stackable white outdoor chairs; my party platters; even our inflatable water slide.
Last summer, I even lent someone a big planter filled with blooming flowers to brighten her front entrance when her home was on the market and being shown frequently.
To me, it was one less container to water. To her, it added curb appeal without getting her nails dirty.
Similarly, another good friend of mine once lent me, for a baby shower I was hosting, her hot pink melamine tray, hot pink beverage bucket, hot pink candles, hot pink serving bowls and hot pink ribbons.
It was just so perfect I still think about it.
Some things, like my coffee carafes, have been in and out of relatives homes so much I m not even sure who first owned them. Or, for that matter, where exactly they are now.
Do I have them? Or does she?
So, yes, it is the season for lending and borrowing. My white folding chairs will be coming back soon, just in time for Carol to borrow them again for her neighborhood block party.
Hey, maybe they will even invite me this year. I just hope they don t ask me to bring any ice.
