Attention Business Editors, Software Writers, Technology Editors:
BakBone's Integrated Data Protection Solutions Go to the Head of the Class at University of Detroit Mercy BakBone Enables University to Slash Data Backups by 50 Percent, Streamline Collection of Exchange Reporting Statistics and Seamlessly Safeguard Oracle Databases SAN DIEGO, June 6 /CNW/ - BakBone Software(R) (Pink Sheets:BKBO), a global provider of heterogeneous integrated data protection solutions, today announced that the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) is leveraging BakBone's technology to significantly shrink backup windows, automate the collection of Exchange reporting statistics, and replace complex scripting for Oracle database backup. Adoption of BakBone's technology into UDM's datacenter is a critical element of the university's commitment to embracing high-tech tools to support quality education on the UDM campus. UDM runs NetVault(R): Backup, NetVault(R): Report Manager for Exchange, NetVault: Backup Application Plug-in Module(TM) (APM) for Exchange and NetVault: Backup APM for Oracle. According to Martin Frankhouse, network manager for University of Detroit Mercy, the university's storage requirements have risen sharply over the last three to four years, with data growing by approximately 10 percent each month. In early 2007, UDM deployed BakBone's NetVault: Report Manager 3.5, which provides expanded reporting functionality on Exchange server space utilization and storage growth forecasting. NetVault: Report Manager further eases Exchange administration with scheduled alerts regarding potential corporate network abuse and mail delivery times, as well as sent-and-received mail usage. With NetVault: Report Manager, UDM can obtain statistics on which students and faculty are using the most space, sending the most emails and receiving the most emails, along with the size of those emails. "Having all this reporting functionality in one integrated system is a great timesaver," said Frankhouse. "I can easily define and schedule jobs or reports while continuing to monitor activity from a unified console that presents a 'big picture' of what's going on in my increasingly complex environment." In addition to NetVault: Report Manager for Exchange, UDM also utilizes NetVault: Backup APM for Exchange, embracing best-of-class data protection to reduce the impact of major outages. Prior to BakBone's Exchange backup solution, the university relied on pre-packaged backup products bundled with Exchange. However, these limited offerings required the team to restore the entire mailbox store, even if just one mailbox became corrupted or was deleted. "Rebuilding both the primary and backup servers to recover the mailboxes following a failure took nearly five days--and email for 100 people, mostly university executives, was down the entire time," said Frankhouse. "In contrast, BakBone's APM for Exchange provides granular recovery of an individual mailbox or email, which makes a huge difference when you're planning to roll out 2,000 mailboxes." Also key to UDM's BakBone deployment is NetVault: Backup APM for Oracle, which delivers enhanced data protection for the online community of students and faculty. BakBone replaced Oracle's Recovery Manager (RMAN), which required more time to be spent on administration for scripting and management. "The online community cannot be brought down--period--so we take frequent backups," added Frankhouse. "NetVault: Backup APM for Oracle substantially lessens the time and effort to conduct backups and restores while eliminating the need to create complex scripts or modify backup routines." "The NetVault suite of products provides our customers with flexible solutions that are easily integrated into their existing infrastructures and scale as their storage demands evolve," said Jeff Drescher, director of product management at BakBone. "With BakBone, UDM has cut their backup and recovery window by 50 percent and can proactively manage the many different types of data in their complex enterprise environment." Enhanced regulatory compliance is another plus from BakBone's integrated data protection approach, which ensures that UDM can recover more than a year's worth of data and email in less than a day. More than three years of student records are archived for longer-term retention. "The integrated, cross-platform capabilities of the NetVault product suite are outstanding and so is the company's tech support--BakBone will play an integral role in protecting UDM's critical data for years to come," said Frankhouse.
