The era of costume jewellery dates backs to 1930's when jewelleries were made to fit a particular dress for a short span of time. There was no intention of passing them through generations. These jewelleries were worn with a specific dress then remolded into a new design to suit a new dressing style. Therefore, it was also known as antique jewellery because of their short life.
These costume jewelleries are usually made of inexpensive materials like glass, beads, semi-precious metals and plastic. Being made from inexpensive materials, costume jewellery is best in quality and has its own charm for its wearers. Designers used different catchy and attractive designs to cater people who have an elegant taste of jewellery.
Identifying true costume jewellery is a tough job as not everyone knows the exact difference between antique and costume jewellery. But for jewellery collector, it is rather easy; the cut, design, material and the piece reflects the impression of that era. For example dress pins were most popular during 1930's and subsisted till 1950's. Whereas rich people of that era used a thin layer of gold containing a silver base for making their jewellery. Advent of middle class gave birth to the beautiful and vivacious costume jewellery, regardless of being crafted from inexpensive and disposable materials.
Later with the trend rhinestone jewelleries became popular. This is a very small piece of jewellery made of silver tones metal with different stones. Due to its unavailability till 1940's, most of the rhinestone jewelleries were made of metals with a single stone or using numerous rhinestones for a single piece of jewel. Then this metal is molded in to earrings, neck wears, pieces etc.
You can also estimate the age of costume jewellery through its back. At the beginning, jewelleries were not signed but marked with a number to distinguish a designer from his competitors. Later in 1950's the fashion of signing jewelleries emerged when designer marked their creativity with their signature. This can be easily noticed by looking at the back of pieces like brooches, earrings and necklaces. The clasp of a brooch also differs from time to time. Costume jewellery is also differentiated on its pattern of wearing. Which makes, the style and design are an integral part of costume jewelleries.
Till today the charm of costume jewellery exists. You need a special and distinctive taste to like these jewelleries as they depict a particular class and pattern.
