Before the pageant I never thought that I would have won, but when I hit the stage for the first time that night I just knew I had the crown," were the words of newly crowned Miss Jamzone, Christa Simmons.

The 22-year-old beauty came out victorious from a field of eight on Sunday night last at Splashims Fun Resort.

Although Christa was at an advantage over the field since she is a reigning queen of the Miss Bartica Regatta and has had quite a bit of experience in the pageant arena, everyone knew that it would have been a close fight to the end. But she stood tall and strong and in the end she almost drove out of the fun park as the top prize is a car.

Eighteen-year-old Jamella Lewis was judged the first runner-up, while Mekisha Naughton is the second runner-up.

The Scene sat down with the new queen a few days after the crowning, and a still excited Christa went in-depth about her experiences during the run-up to the pageant and on the big night.

She chose the development of boxing in Guyana and how it can help to promote our tourism industry as her platform. Christa, a resident of Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara said that her preparations for the pageant started towards the end of June when she was chosen as a delegate. When she first heard that her platform was boxing, Christa said that she recognized it would have been a challenge since she was no boxing fan.

I had to do a lot of research to get myself prepared to speak about it in front of an audience, judges, and most of all on camera."

She had less than two months to do this. After getting advice and information from different sources she began putting her speech together. Because of the amount of information she was receiving Christa said that she soon became confused.

"About two weeks before the pageant I was getting very frustrated because of all the help I was getting from different sources.

I was basically not prepared.

I had the information, but I just didn't have it in order. All sorts of thoughts were running through my head and I was getting regular cold feet," she told The Scene with a smile.

Owing to her confusion the beauty said that she endured many sleepless nights rewriting her speech which had to be ready for August 8, the night of the question and answer segment on live television. But even that experience did not beat the travelling during the preparation for the pageant, since Christa had to come to the city every day for rehearsals in the evenings. She summed it all up as "not exciting."

Recounting a scary experience, Christa said that the Friday before the pageant the delegates went up to Splashmins for the grand rehearsal. After that she pampered herself at the salon and then headed home. This was around midnight.

Trouble struck before she could reach home. Christa recounted that the bus driver took drastic measures to avoid hitting a vehicle which was turning onto the East Bank Demerara road from a street opposite the McDoom gas station. The two vehicles did not collide, but the one Christa was in ended up on its side. Christa, who was sitting in the front seat, managed to escape with only small bruises on her knees and elbows. It is an experience she says she would never forget, but as she looks back now she feels it was worth it.

Securing sponsorship was also a difficult task for the queen. She explained that each delegate was responsible for finding her own sponsor. The owners of Hair Frenzy agreed to be her sponsors on August 8 in the knick of time, as it was the day of the sashing ceremony. She expressed special thanks to Hair Frenzy and the staff for their hard work and support for getting her through this pageant.

She also said that Astro Arts International must also be commended for designing her costume and local designer Olympia Small-Sonaram for her creative swimwear. It was the combined effort of the three which she feels gave her the edge over the other delegates when it mattered most.

And holding two titles at once is not a problem for her, since both pageants are tourism based. The only difference she said is that in Jamzone you got to create your own swimwear, and instead of wearing an evening gown you have to wear a costume.

Pageant day

On the morning of the pageant Christa said they all went through their pageant routine. After the make-up and hair-styling sessions they went backstage at 5 pm, but never hit the stage until minutes to 7 pm.

"I was the first to go on stage for the opening dance and introduction, so I was peeping from behind the curtains at the crowd. I was looking for my supporters so that I could know where to look so that I could be comfortable," she said.

Christa told The Scene that her sponsor made a lot of t-shirts, posters and flyers so whereever she looked, she saw herself. That, she said, was a real boost for her.

When she emerged on stage, Christa said that she was suddenly filled with confidence and just started working from that point on. After the final three were chosen, Christa said knew she had the crown after she answered her final question.

"Me and Jamella were holding hands, and I turned and said, 'Is me and you again girl,'" Christa explained that it had also been a run to the finish between her and Jamella for the Miss Bartica Regatta crown. Having a car is like a fulfilment for Christa. She said that although she doesn't have her licence, the committee as part of the prize will be sending her to driving classes. "I like cars, and I can't wait for the prize-giving ceremony to finally touch it. I have a car - what else do I need?" a glowing Christa said.

Asked whether she will be entering another pageant in the near future, Christa said that she is not sure since she has fulfilled her dream by owning a car.

"I have a car now. What else can I ask for?" she asked with a bright smile. (Zoisa_f@yahoo.
