Dubai is the perfect destination to go for a taste of the exotic Middle East, major pampering at first-class beach resorts and the gawk-fest at the reputedly only seven-star hotel in the world, the Burj al Arab.
As many times as we've been to Dubai, the Burj is still an architectural beauty. It is one of many architectural landmarks in the burgeoning city.
What's so great about Dubai?
For now, it seems relatively isolated from the turmoil of the rest of the region. English is widely spoken. The people are friendly. Taxis are cheap.
The emirate of Dubai is only about the size of the state of Rhode Island, but it has more than 40 shopping malls, and that number continues to grow. Dubai is one of seven emirates, or independent kingdoms, of the United Arab Emirates.
And Emirates, the national airline, is how all airlines need to be. First class all the way, baby - even in coach.
You will only probably need four days. And we have it all mapped out for you. Start by catching one of Emirates Airline's daily flights (www.emirates.com) from New York. Delta will start service from its Atlanta hub in May 2007.
Stay in Jumeirah. We'll fill you in on our favorite hotels. Don't miss the Shopping Festival. Yeah, they have a shopping festival December through the first week of February (www.mydsf.com).
BEST EXPERIENCES: Walk through the gold and spice souks; slather on sunscreen at Dubai's best beaches in Jumeirah. You have to go on a desert safari - no matter how hokey. Travel snobs, shut up! Camels and belly dancers are cool. Of course, our favorite pastime: shopping and people-watching at the malls.
WHAT TO BUY:
Gold jewelry
Omani silver
Pashmina shawls
Electronics
Perfume
TOUR OPERATORS: Check out the itineraries we selected. We did all the work for you.
EXCURSIONS: No matter how modern the Middle East becomes, the romance of Old Arabia is still there, and you can catch a glimpse by heading out to Fujairah on the east coast for some snorkeling and diving or over to Oman with its traditional villages, mountains and waterfalls.
