I've been working online and from home for my own business for over 5 years now and although I have yet to strike it truly rich online I do support a wife and two kids in a modest but comfortable lifestyle. the most appreciated benefit to my work is the amount if free time and interaction I maintain with my family. By working from home I am literally here all day and although filtering out distractions is occasionally a distraction the benefits of spending so much time with my boys is worth it to me easily. My oldest son is in school now and gone for much of the day but I do still have my youngest son and our best times are spent alone during the day as we have nothing but free time and lots to do in our area. Having spent the first years of oldest sons life working for someone else I missed out on many of the beauties of a toddlers life and I am certainly enjoying them now. No job I ever had with any other person or company allowed me to be so free with my time and obviously ever could.
Working from home isn't all easy and sticking to a work schedule and keeping up with things will be your biggest headache. Working online and building my own websites used to not require my daily input and I could actually go weeks and even months without doing anything and still collect checks from websites that may not have been updated in a year. The web has changed and so has my business. I now try to spend a few hours online each and every day building and managing my websites. I now have over 100 active websites to manage and just keeping them all updated is a daunting task alone. I've taken to outsourcing many of my activities and find a growing amount of my time is spent in finding people to do things for me and my business.
I now have over 20 people helping out with paid positions helping my network of sites grow. I pay people to build links to my websites and post review on their own blogs. I pay people to write articles and submit them to various websites for promotions and more inbound links. I hire people to manage my community forums and maintain the 1000's of members we now have discussing all sorts of cool things. I now pay someone to build simple graphics for my websites as I no longer have the time or even the necessary skills to compete with Photoshop pros these days. I can buy a website cheaper than I can build one and it's become that it's cheaper for me to pay people to build them and maintain then it is to try and do it all myself. My days as a webmaster have taken on a more managers approach to things and less a developer which I guess is a natural progression. I still have time for new technologies and love to learn new things online but much of my work has been in sourcing new advertising opportunities or people to take more work from me.
It's been a blessing once again to have the time and opportunity to work for my own business an build my own network of income producing websites that faithfully sustain us and will someday hopefully offer us a big payout when we are able to develop a more robust and mature network of profitable websites. I will never again for work for any company other then my own and hopefully my children will grow up into an easy to run business that will continue to support them their entire lives. It would be nice that I start a work from home business that my kids continue to manage from home over the course of their lives. If you are not actively working online then you must ask yourself what am I waiting for?
