Health: Pharmacy Benefit Management Organizations 4. Health: Redefining Early Breast Cancer Detection 5. Women's Issues: Female Empowerment in Politics ROUNDUP: STEROIDS IN SPORTS In light of recent scandals and indictments, speculation of steroid usage among professional athletes surfaced all across the sports board. While some health experts advocate the damaging effects of steroids, others argue healthy dosages can be beneficial to athletic performance. Following are experts who can comment: 1. MICHAEL JOSEPHSON, founder of the JOSEPHSON INSTITUTE OF ETHICS: The full impact of the Balco designer steroids scandal is yet to be felt, but already some of our nation's most prominent sports heroes have been discredited by steroid use and accusations of use. Baseball will ultimately reform but confidence in the integrity of achievement records in the new era may never be regained. News Contact: Stephen Gregg, steve@millergeer.n
DR. SIMON MAYBAUM, medical director of the CENTER FOR ADVANCED CARDIAC THERAPY AT NEW YORK'S MONTEFIORE MEDICAL CENTER: With performance-enhancing drugs a continuing controversy in the sports world, people with heart failure will want to know that there is a possible medical benefit to these drugs. On the positive side, Clenbuterol, which is not approved in the U.S., and is used illegally by body builders, has been shown to have potential for building up the heart muscle of patients with end-stage heart failure. In a current study, the only one in the country, Maybaum is determining the benefits of Clenbuterol with exercise for heart patients. Exercise programs at Montefiore's Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit are part of the regimen. News Contact: Mike Quane, mquane@montefiore.n
SHAUN ASSAEL is author of the forthcoming Steroid Nation (ESPN Books); the New York Times bestseller Sex, Lies and Headlocks: The Real Story of Vince McMahon and World Wrestling Entertainment (Crown: 2002); and Wide Open: Days and Nights on the NASCAR Tour (Ballantine: 1998). Assael can discuss the outlook on regulation of athletes and steroid use, as well as how this issue will affect the credibility of athletes and sports records: We are at the dawn of a regulatory explosion in sports. Steroids are now fully a part of America's war on drugs. Regarding credibility of athletes and sports records, fans are already trying to figure out which records they want to strike and why. But at the end of the day, what will matter is their personal connection to the athlete under suspicion. The last 10 years was a performance-enhancing decade, and fans are making subtle distinctions about who should bear the brunt of the blame. Assael is a senior writer with ESPN the Magazine, and his work has appeared in such other places as Esquire, Glamour and the Village Voice. News Contact: Veronica Lavarro, veronical@carryonpr.n
