It was a busy weekend in Thunder Bay as several groups were raising money, teaching life lessons and flexing their muscles.
The 13th annual Hydro One Relay for Shelter took place at Chippewa Park on Saturday. The event featured various activities where kids and adults alike could test their skills for a good cause. The always popular tug-of-war had people pulling for Shelter House. This year over $100,000 was raised for the deserving cause.
While some were pulling for charity, others raced for it. The 4th annual Thunder Bay 100 Grand Prix had soapbox racers flying down Waverly Hill at speeds up to 45-kilometers per hour. This year's event had 33 soapboxers looking for the top prize. Event organizer Tom Speer says the race this year even had some special needs children taking a seat behind the wheel.
''We added special needs cars, which are two seaters which allows the special needs kids to participate. It's been very, very enjoyable to watch them come down the hill, with parents driving in the back and children driving in the front.''
The races brought in $25,000 for the George Jeffrey Children's Foundation new building.
As some organizations flexed their charitable muscle, others flexed in the name of competition. The second annual Thunder in the Bay Bodybuilding Competition took place at Wiseguys Nightclub, Saturday. Twenty bodybuilders and fitness and figure competitors took the stage to wow the judges. Event organizer Mike Carangi says Thunder Bay is the hotbed for fitness and bodybuilding in Northern Ontario and predicts this event should grow in years to come.
And while bodybuilders have to learn how to properly train their muscles, teens around the city learned a little about homelessness this weekend. The 5th annual Salvation Army Teen Survival Challenge took place at Current River Park from Saturday to Sunday morning. The 24-hour event had teens learning about homelessness from a first-person perspective. Current River Park was staged as mini-city, requiring teens to go about getting everything from proper identification to a job to finally off the streets. Event organizer Gail Kromm says on top of the valuable life lesson, the Survival Challenge teaches kids about the processes involved in life.
''When you apply for the identification, you apply for it, then you're going to have to wait for that ID to be available. Some of it they have to pay for. The birth certificate they have to pay for. So if they don't have any money to pay for their birth certificate to start with them they're going to have to find some means to get some money in order to be able to get those types of ID.
Each teen raised a minimum of $75 to take part in the event with the funds going to support numerous local Salvation Army programs.
As teens went through survival exercises, baby salmon were ready to take on the real thing. Baby salmon, otherwise known as smolts, were released as part of the annual Kam River restocking. This is the first year the smolts have been raised locally usually being imported from hatcheries in Owen Sound or Wawa. President of the Thunder Bay Salmon Association, Bob Hoopsteen says hatchery smolts generally have a better chance of surviving than those born in the wild.
''Ones that hatch in the river system, they start from very small and by the time they get to 2-3 inches, probably 50 per cent of the fish are already eaten up or died. So this way here we give them a fighting chance.''
From the Kaministiquia River the salmon will eventually make their way to Big Lake.
