Hard times trigger Depression memories

The nation's unemployment rate jumped to 8.5 percent in March, the highest since late 1983, as a wide swath of employers eliminated 663,000 jobs. If part-time and discouraged workers were factored in, the unemployment rate would have been 15.6 percent in March.

And economists say there's no relief in sight. Given that, many economists predict the unemployment rate will hit 10 percent at the end of this year. The Fed says unemployment will remain elevated into 2011.

Some people point to this economic crisis as reminiscent of the Great Depression. What was it like to experience those years of job lines?

The Tennessean is asking folks to share their memories or share the stories their older relatives told them. We'll tell those stories periodically in The Tennessean or on Tennessean.com.
