The president of our engineering firm decided the other day to treat everybody to lunch by ordering Quizno’s. To this effect, we all received emails asking what we would want, but mine was especially written as the office manager knew of my ‘unique’ diet.

“So what would you like…a veggie sandwich?” was her question.

Although I politely declined the offer, she did ask me later on during the luncheon what type of vegetarian I was by the way. I told her what it was and in the process a discussion ensued on the various forms of vegetarian regimens that do exist.

Folks, if you are curious to what these types are, in no particular order, here is a look at the common ones.

1) Pescatarian

The word “pescatarian” is occasionally used to describe those who abstain from eating all meat and animal flesh with the exception of fish.

2) Flexitarian/Semi-vegetarian

“Flexitarian” is a term recently coined to describe those who eat a mostly vegetarian diet, but occasionally eat meat.

3) Vegetarian (Lacto-ovo- vegetarian)

People who do not eat beef, pork, poultry, fish, shellfish or animal flesh of any kind, but do eat eggs and dairy products are lacto-ovo vegetarians

Lacto-vegetarian is used to describe a vegetarian who does not eat eggs, but does eat dairy products.

Ovo-vegetarian refers to people who do not eat meat or dairy products but do eat eggs.

4) Vegan

Vegans do not eat meat of any kind and also do not eat eggs, dairy products, or processed foods containing these or other animal-derived ingredients such as gelatin.

5) Raw vegan/Raw food diet

A raw vegan diet consists of unprocessed vegan foods that have not been heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit (46 degrees Celsius).

6) Macrobiotic

The macrobiotic diet, revered by some for its healthy and healing qualities, includes unprocessed vegan foods, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and allows the occasional consumption of fish.

Well, after we discussed the various types of vegetarian regimens, I was quick to point out that I was somewhere in between 4 and 5, with more of me in the fifth option.

Moreover, I added that I am no stranger to the use of fasts and subsisting on mono-meals of seasonal fruits for days on end and that on my ‘off-days’ from such a strict regimen, the furthest I may go will be some steamed veggies with perhaps some roots or whole grains (making sure the latter has been soaked for at least 12-hours prior to preparation).

The bottom-line is to be sure you really educate yourself on the various choices FIRST if you are considering any of these various forms of vegetarian regimens.

Here’s to health in ’07 and beyond.
