Most everyone can name a prescription drug that aids in each ailment, but many don't know much about a holistic approach.

Edwardsville resident Cynthia Edwards has spent over 20 years studying holistic therapy.

Her new business, Release The Stress, offers the Edwardsville-Glen Carbon area an alternative path to a healthier life through more non-traditional and non-invasive techniques.

A licensed massage technician for many years, Edwards became interested in holistic therapy when she worked with AIDS and cancer patients providing massages. As she watched patients try holistic therapy and see results, she became a believer. "Over the years, I'm seeing it right before my eyes," she said. "I went out and really studied it and found I was saying "this stuff is really true -- it works.""

The holistic approach, as Edwards explained, is entirely different than how we're accustomed to dealing with an ailment. "We go to a doctor and tell him our symptoms," she said. "He writes a script for those symptoms and we go to a pharmacy -- we don't question the drug or the side effects -- we just want that script which covers up but doesn't deal with the symptoms. It (holistic therapy) deals with the root of the problem. It treats the symptom."

Edwards said that the therapy she offers is all about "empowering" her clients "through education." "I explain exactly how every treatment works," said Edwards. "I try to empower them so that they can make a healthy decision for their health." The result is that each patient walks out with detailed documentation on the procedure they've experienced as well as additional reading material.

Edwards offers a variety of therapies including traditional massages like Swedish, reflexology and deep tissue. She also offers ionization therapy, colonics and bio- communication and lypossage.

Ionization therapy is done through a foot detox and costs just $45. The concept behind detoxing the body begins with the idea that your body absorbs all chemicals and toxins that "it comes in contact with." These toxins may be as simple as hand lotions we apply to our skin or sodas we consume to as complex as radiation therapy cancer patients endure or prescription drug cocktails that AIDS patients must ingest. "Detoxing is really important," Edwards said. "You're able to push toxins through your body."

According to Edwards, the foot is one of the largest areas of the body where these toxins can be released. A foot detox is approximately a 30 minute process. Patients place their bare feet in a small tub of warm water and salt. The salt serves as a conductor. An electronic piece of equipment is placed within the tub. This transfers positive and negative ions within the feet. This transfer creates a "zapping of cells." As Edwards explained it, this "zapping of the cells causes those cells to spit out the toxins that your body has absorbed."

Colonics is another popular service she offers. The procedure, which is a variant of an enema treatment, flushes out the colon of impurities. The theory behind colonics is based on the fact that our current American diet and lifestyle have changed for the worse. "We don't drink enough fluids -- we don't get enough exercise," Edwards said. She said that our lack of proper diet and exercise has caused our bodies to not fully expel waste which ultimately rots inside our bodies releasing toxins. The thinking is that by gently washing the lining of the colon, dangerous toxins will be expelled creating a healthier body.

One of the more high-tech services Edwards offers is bio-communication. Clients place their hand and palm on the equipment and proprietary software actually reads the frequency and interaction of cells within the body and subsequently can determine cell imbalances.

According to the software manufacturer's Web site, "As your cells communicate, Zyto (this) technology makes it possible to eavesdrop and listen to the conversation." By listening to the cells, the frequency of cells and organs in the body can be determined. Edwards can then prescribe herbs that can help to bring the body back into balance creating a healthier body.

A similar analysis can be done through manual muscle testing. Edwards has the patient apply pressure to key points on the body that correlate to vital organs. Then through a series of muscle testing she is able to identify nutrients that the body's energy field is missing. By bringing the nutrient into the body's energy field, balance is reached.

She said that she uses "the same muscle testing techniques to help identify and eliminate interference fields in the body's energetic pathways caused by scars, traumas, surgeries or other injuries." This requires the individual to take fewer supplements with far greater effects because the body's ability to absorb the nutrients has been greatly enhanced.

While these concepts may seem foreign to many people, Edwards identified with the skepticism that she sometimes receives. "It's weird. It's simple herbs, but it works," she said emphatically. "It works."

By providing nutrients that the body is missing, Edwards said that the herbs, "give the body food and energy - The body begins repairing itself."

After seeing the positive effects of her therapy on patients, Edwards feels very humble when one of them thanks her profusely. "They have no idea what they did for me," she said referring to how fortunate she feels to have learned about holistic approaches. "They healed me."
