Low stomach acid can not only cause you digested discomfort but can also cause problems with your:
• Hormone balance
• Immune system
• Muscle system
• Skeletal system
Hydrochloric acid is important in the absorption of certain minerals and vitamin B6. There are two forms of hydrochloric acid insufficiency, complete hydrochloric acid insufficiency is known as achlorhydria and partial hydrochloric acid insufficiency is known as hypochlorhydria.
The symptoms of low hydrochloric acid are:
• Belching after a meal
• Constipation
• Diarrhoea
• Flatulence
• Heartburn
• Indigestion
• Nausea
• Reflux
• The feeling of fullness after eating
• The sensation of a heavy weight in the stomach
The lack of hydrochloric acid can lead to your digestion systems becoming toxic which may result in you suffering from disorders such as:
• Arthritis
• Degenerative mental disorders
• Fatigue
• Migraine
This happens because chyme can attach itself to your intestine walls where it hardens and becomes putrefied because of the lack of hydrochloric acid. The putrefied chyme will then become toxic, passing toxins into your blood stream via your blood vessels that lead from your digestive tract causing the hindrance of nutrient absorption and letting toxins circulate throughout your body resulting in the disorders mentioned above.
The deficiency of hydrochloric acid can let harmful substances enter your intestines, upsetting the delicate balance of your gut flora. As a result, the lining of your digestive tract may well be exposed to unfriendly substances that will cause cells of the walls to weaken, letting into your bloodstream allergens and toxic waste. This is known as leaky gut and can result in symptoms such as:
• Allergies
• Chronic fatigue
• Headaches
• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
• Joint inflammation
• Low immunity
• Migraine
• Premature ageing
• Skin problems
The lack of hydrochloric acid has also been linked with more clinical implications such as:
• Alcoholism
• Anaemia
• Arthritis
• Asthma
• Diabetes
• Disease of the gastrointestinal tract
• Gall-bladder disease
• Hyperthyroid
• Hypothyroid
• Osteoporosis
• Skin diseases
One interesting fact, it has been documented that in cases of gall-bladder diseases, just over half of the patients had a reduction of hydrochloric acid.
A deficiency of hydrochloric acid may increase your susceptibility to enteric bacterial infections because of survival of ingested bacteria leading to intestinal overgrowth. Decreasing gastric acidity encourages Candida overgrowth especially in women. Candida albicans needs pH 7.4 for optimal growth but becomes completely inhibited at pH 4.5. One study showed an improvement in the physical condition in twenty-seven patients with no hydrochloric acid, that were supplemented with betaine hydrochloric acid and pepsin for 6 months. Gas and indigestion were relieved in all patients with these complaints.
