HE dropped 20kg last year, which didn't hurt as much as the $2 million he dropped when he got swamped by the digital camera revolution.
James Delahunty is aiming to lose another 20kg in 2008 and by mid-year plans to be operating an online service giving pharmaceutical advice to anyone in need.
One of the city's chemist shop kings along with the Whites, the Maloufs and the Gardiners, Delahunty runs his small empire of seven stores and online pharmaceutical business from a block of converted weatherboard flats in Spring Hill, a short distance from his home.
The office furniture is well-worn and he's just replaced his 24-year-old panel van with a new car. Delahunty, plainly, doesn't believe in spending money needlessly.
We're sitting at what may have once been a kitchen table talking about prescription drugs and he raises the spectre of Heath Ledger's untimely end.
People just don't know the power of prescription drugs. That's why Ledger died so quickly, he says.
You take eight Panadol and if you're not used to taking them they can shut your liver down and shut you down, but you don't feel it for the first 24 hours.
After that it's too late because your liver and kidneys are failing and that's the danger of Woolies and Coles selling Nurofen and things like that. It gives better access to the people, but it's got to be sold responsibly.
If Ledger had gone to one pharmacist for his medication they would have said, 'hey, these drugs will interact'.
Delahunty's father, James, began the business in 1932 when he opened a chemist shop on the corner of Queen and Wharf streets. He sent his son to study pharmacy at the University of Queensland, where Delahunty admits he majored in non-academic activity.
I was a long time getting through uni, he says ruefully. He worked in locum jobs around the city when he finally graduated before moving to the Papua New Guinea highlands in 1970 and working there for a year.
Returning to Brisbane, he joined the family business and now suffers the legacy of decades spent dispensing advice to his customers.
I've got crook feet and crook knees. You know what chemists get from standing up all day you get varicose veins, haemorrhoids, then you get rectal cancer and then you die, he says, smiling at his own dark humour.
I remark on the cut-price Viagra advertisements that appear on my computer screen every time I log on and he nods.
The amount of fake drugs out there is astounding but it's not the fake Viagras but the fake antibiotics that worry us, he says. People are being sold sugar and it's coming out of China and India.
Delahunty knows what will continue to drive customers into his stores.
Dope, he says. All these people using marijuana are my next customers. These so-called recreational drugs are bad things. I've got customers from barristers down to people who've just come out of jail.
People think they're better than God and have tried taking drugs in a recreational sense and I've seen chemists caught up in that as well.
Delahunty sees Coles and Woolworths the big boys as the demons.
The big boys are knocking off as much of our business as they can. Coles has bought an online pharmacy called Pharmacy Direct and Woolies is very keen to get into pharmacies and use them as a loss leader (selling below cost price) down the back of their stores but legislation prevents that at the moment.
There are people who want service and others who want self-selection. There's now the professional model and the big-shop model, he says, making it plain he believes that a pharmacists's place is on the shop floor.
Pharmacists should be one-on-one. When I'm in the shops I'm always trying to serve someone. In my Australian way I've got a line of patter I've learnt over the years but I'd have to say that my knowledge is not as good as the kids coming through university now.
But what I lack in knowledge I make up for by getting the message across.
Diabetes, weight management, asthma, blood pressure, nicotine replacement these are all areas of speciality for pharmacists.
A former convener of a lunchtime group known as The Big Men's Club, which dined regularly at Tattersalls Club, Delahunty is familiar with weight-management problems.
I'd exercise but never lose any weight. I think it was Friday nights on the rum and Cokes that's my drink that did it.
'Now I eat fish and salad. I used to think salad was one of the greatest poisons on earth.
On the wall behind him is a price list advertising film development costs, the sort that once adorned most pharmacies in pre-digital camera days. That cost me $2 million, he says. I bought the biggest, best mini-lab you could. I thought I knew everything. We were the first outside Japan to have one but in Christmas 2003, everybody got a digital camera. By June we'd shut the lab. A business called Photo Continental came along and bought my machines for about a fifth of their price and they're still using them.
Having been overtaken once by technology, Delahunty is determined not to let it happen again.
His plan to provide internet advice is part of his strategy to stay relevant.
We've got a strong presence online as Chemist Australia and I'm going to provide a Q A format covering about 3000 diseases. People will be able to email their questions and we'll be trialling it after Easter, he says.
As I leave he gives me some free advice. If you drink, remember this a day a week, a week a month, a month a year.
Which means? I ask.
One alcohol-free day a week, and one week free every month and one month free every year, he says.
A quick calculation showed that to equal five months abstinence a year. Hmmmmm.
