At least one dead, five injured, several buildings gone after Sask explosion April 18, 2008

NIPAWIN, Sask. - A large explosion and fire rocked the downtown area of a small Saskatchewan town Friday, killing one person and injuring five others.

At least three businesses in Nipawin were "gone" after the blast, including a meat shop, a cafe and a fitness centre, said an employee at the Kingfisher Inn, about a kilometre from the blast site.

"Apparently all the windows in the buildings across the street are gone as well," said the woman, who would only give her name as Karen.

"The power went out at the same time and it was just like something got hit. It's hard to describe. You could feel the ground."

Of the five injured, two remain in a local hospital, two have been transferred to hospital outside the community and one person has been treated and released, said Peggy Ratcliffe, an official with the Kelsey Trail Health Region.

Police said the blast happened around 11 a.m. in the community about 250 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, and the cause isn't yet known.

A government source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a building was being demolished and a natural gas line ruptured. The source said a worker was evacuating the buildings when the explosion occurred.

Emergency authorities cordoned off a two-block area near the scene, just off the community's main street.

Eyewitness Doug Hidelbaugh told CJWW radio in Saskatoon that a large plume of smoke could be seen following the blast.

"It shook most of the downtown area and immediately everybody ran out of their businesses to check what had happened," Hidelbaugh said.

He said he took an injured person to hospital for treatment. The man was lucid enough to tell him about a strange smell right before the explosion.

"He did say that he had phoned the gas department in Nipawin to check out an unusual smell in his business," Hidelbaugh said.

Gayle Knox, a town council member in the community of just over 4,000, said a neighbour had been at a downtown church for an exercise class when members noticed a queer smell.

"They smelled the smell of gas when they were out walking," said Knox, adding the woman quickly left the area for home.

The force of the explosion rattled Knox's home, which is about one kilometre from the scene.

"I was sitting at the computer when I heard this blast. You could feel that it was a blast, it wasn't a car running into the house, but it sure felt like that," she said.

A local radio station was broadcasting a plea for residents to stay away from the area, she said.

Firefighters from nearby Carrot River were helping local firefighters and there were concerns that flames might reach a hardware and sporting goods store stocked with paint and ammunition.
