Ancestors and Eguns
LESSON #5 Communicating with your Ancestors
Your Ancestors and eguns are those family members and relatives
and friends that once were alive and walked the earth. Your
ancestors go back to the beginning of time and are always
available to protect and guide you on your path toward
enlightenment.
The ancestors and eguns are also your first line of defense
against external forces that will try to disrupt your every day
life activities. The ancestors and eguns, also clear your path of
negative Ashe and will protect you when Iku (death) is near.
These are just a few reasons why it's important to establish and
maintain communication with your ancestors and eguns. Oftentimes,
we ask ourselves how can we communicate with the dead? How can we
establish a constant link with our ancestors without ourselves
expiring also?
Also, what benefits can I obtain from my communicating with my
ancestors? Communicating with your ancestors and eguns is not as
difficult as one might think. The simplest way of communicating
with them is by constructing a shrine in their honor. An Ancestral
and Egun shine serves as a home for them. When no ancestor shine
is present in your home, the ancestors will often have free reign
of the house, and can come and do whenever they wish. However,
they don't really like this type of freedom. The ancestors prefer
to have a certain area that is assigned to them, and even if they
move about freely within the home, they know that they can go to
their specific area for rest and relaxation, whenever they wish.
The shrine also is used to consult your ancestors and by
presenting offerings ,enlist their assistance on a particular
problem you may have. The shrine should be placed in a corner of
your room, or suspended on the wall above the floor. (I have
one on the floor, and another above the floor.) The area where the
shrine is being constructed should be consecrated by blowing rum
and smoke on the selected area prior to placing the shine on it.
Items to place on the shrine include pictures of the deceased
ONLY, no live pictures of people should be on this shrine; this is
a shrine for the dead.
Also, if you don't have pictures of the deceased, you can write
heir names on a piece of paper and place it on the shrine. A 7-day
white candle, a glass of rum, a glass of water, a cigar, a plate
of food, preferably on a plate that has a chip on it.
Coffee, flowers and a cigar can also be presented to the shrine.
Prayers should also be said when consecuating the shrine.
Offerings should be placed on the plate of the shrine frequently,
once a week).
The ancestors also communicate to you by causing pain in certain
parts of your body. They usually do this to inform you that they
want to speak with you, or other family members ,and require a
spiritual mass to be done. The ancestors and eguns will also
communicate to you via dream states, or in your dreams. They may
appear as a relative presently deceased, or as a favorite animal
that you liked who has died. Or, they may come in spirit form,
and indicate in that state, something that you should know, or be
protected from.
Sometimes your ancestor's strength has become very weak. This
happens for a number of reasons: 1) You not giving the ancestors
enough attention for extended periods of time, not strengthening
them, not feeding them, not talking to them, or not giving them
respect. In this weaken state your ancestors have difficulty
advocating for you, and you will find yourself blocked a lot in
what you are doing. This is one of the reasons why it's very
important to be able to communicate with your ancestors and eguns
and provide them with constant offerings, both on their shrine and
in the street near a crossroad.
By providing strength, attention, and respect to your ancestors,
they will always assist you and guide you, even when everyone else
may have abandoned you.
The Room
I sit here in the room, no one is around me, I am alone...
I see no one here, yet the space is not bare,
The room seems to be full not only with air,
There are "others " by my side, to assist, desist and
to tell bad things around me you are dismissed.
Do I see these "helpers "in this empty room with me??
These helpers that suppose to always accompany me?
Some call them, ancestors, spirits, angels, or orisha's galore
But I do not see them in this room that's quite small.
A chair, two tables and computer just fits,
A closet, a desk for my things, and a shelf for my mess.
A picture of my favorite singer hangs up on the wall, along with a calendar showing me summer and fall...
It's such a small room for me to live in, I just can't believe how
Quite filled it is, with my mother, my brother, and sister long gone,
My father, my friends whom I missed for so long...
That girl in 4E who died mysteriously, who asked me one night to
Pray and set her free, so that she could leave her room finally...
The Grandmother long dead, who thought she was home, I had to explain to her that this was now MY home...
The traveler that said that he stopped for a shift in his flight pattern from the dimension he'd left. He tells me the room is a refueling stop, for spirits, and beings that travel a lot.
I look in the room to see, if there is a "ripple", a "glittering", or an emptiness that's fulled with people and things that I really can't see.
One chair, two tables, and a T.V. for me. Yet, there is a sense
that I'm not alone, there's an energy here that pulsates and grows;
It's very subtle, affecting my body, mind and my pulse,
Having me wonder what I cherish in my life the most.
I call my friends, they let me know that I'm not losing my mind.
and that these things happen to all of mankind.
The Room is empty, how can this be?
To have all these energies and spirits around me?
I still must understand that there are many levels still, that I must learn to master in order to know when a room is empty or full.
For nothing is truly "empty" or lack "nothingness" for all of nothing has Life, Love and Happiness.
