Together, the Orange County Community Foundation and The Orange County Register will make a substantial gift toward the campaign.

HUNTINGTON BEACH The first time Barbara Phillips broke her right leg was when she drove her Harley Davidson motorcycle through a barbed-wire fence in 1940.

She fractured her femur, crushed her ankle and heel and tore her knee cap, landing her in the hospital for 18 months.

That was the first of five major injuries to her right leg that resulted from her energetic and independent lifestyle. She was a real estate broker, fiercely competitive and lived for adventure, her daughter Andrea Phillips said.

Now, Barbara Phillips, 86, spends her days in a wheelchair fighting osteoporosis and cancer. However, through the Alzheimer's Family Services Center in Huntington Beach, her family has found a way to let Phillips remain active and independent.

It is really about how we can help that person be the best that they can be," said the center's executive director Cordula Dick-Muehlke.

Alzheimer's Family Services Center is one of 20 organizations that make up The Orange County Register's Season of Caring campaign, the annual effort that raises money for local charities.

As part of Season of Caring, the Register and the Orange County Community Foundation will make a substantial gift toward organizations like the center.

Andrea Phillips said the center was the perfect fit for her family.

In the mornings a bus picks up Barbara Phillips from her daughter's Huntington Beach home and takes her to the center.

There, the seniors are kept on busy schedule. The activities begin with breakfast at 7:45 a.m. and move to specialized physical exercise sessions.

Each senior has a social worker and a nurse to monitor their health and assists participants with a specific set of exercises. Morning activities could include classes on how to prevent falls or practicing getting in and out of a wheelchair. One class has seniors play volleyball with a giant red balloon to help with mobility.

After lunch, seniors can chose from a variety of arts and craft, computer-based memory enhancement programs or a group activity such as bingo or word games.

Group singing sessions are one of the Barbara Phillips' favorite activities at the center, her social worker Lindsay Sarver said.

"We identify specific goals for the participant to keep them sharp," said Dick-Muehlke.

The center also provides caregiver education, family support services and flu shots.

"I just signed a consent form and the center gave her the flu shot," Andrea Phillips said. "It would have been an all-day trek to take her to the doctor (for the shot)."

Phillips says the center is specifically important to their family because it allows her to work full time as a nurse at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian working with expectant couples and infants.

"I know she is getting good care her or I wouldn't be able to focus on my patients at work," she said.
