Amey Cramer says she fills out a lot of online surveys, but one she participated in last year pulled her into the national spotlight.
Cramer, a 27-year-old chef from Orrtanna, appeared on NBC's "Today" show last week to discuss eating disorders after she was included in an article about the subject in the May issue of Self magazine.
Cramer said the magazine contacted her for the story as a result of an online survey she had filled out. The article reveals the results of a Self survey that found that 75 percent of American women think, eat and behave abnormally around food. Cramer said she fell into the "emotional over-eating category."
"I kind of knew I was eating when I was happy, when I was sad," Cramer said. "I didn't know how to change it."
But the story's publication followed Cramer's decision to change her lifestyle, a choice she made after a holiday trip to Miami and after she learned she had high cholesterol. In January, she joined the Gettysburg YWCA, started taking vitamins and began eating healthier.
Cramer said she had constantly been thinking about food, especially as a chef, and would eat even when she was not hungry.
"It was really difficult to get away from that mindset," Cramer said.
Cramer had tried dieting before, but it never lasted long. People should eat healthily and not worry about diets, she said.
"Women, they think about this 'diet' word," Cramer said. "You just have to make minor changes."
Since January,
Cramer has lost 20 pounds and said she feels "much better" than she did prior to her lifestyle adjustment.
"It just kind of clicked," Cramer said. "'I'm ready to do something about this.' It was like a light bulb went off."
In addition to changes she made in her personal life, Cramer also uses a Web site in which she can input information such as what she eats and how she exercises, which in turn gives her details like how many calories she has consumed or burnt.
"It kind of wakes me up to what I'm eating," she said.
While Self featured Cramer's initiative, she was not out of the spotlight yet. She received a call two weeks ago inviting her to appear on "Today" two days later with Lucy Danziger, editor-in-chief of Self magazine, and Cynthia Bulik, an expert from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, to discuss the results of the magazine's survey.
Cramer agreed to what she called the "opportunity of a lifetime." She and her husband, David, traveled to New York City for the April 25 show, staying in a hotel across from Rockefeller Center. After passing through several security stops that morning on her way to the set, Cramer had her hair and makeup done and met the women with whom she would be appearing.
"They kind of calmed my nerves a little bit," Cramer said.
The show often focuses on health, exercise and fitness in its fourth hour, Cramer said, but she found out while sitting in the show's green room that she would be interviewing with anchor Matt Lauer. That was a little more intimidating, she said, but once she went there it went well.
"I was surprised that I was able to speak," Cramer said. "I finally got it out."
Although she did not meet the show's other anchors, Cramer said she did see them backstage. She called the experience at the show "great."
"They were all so nice," Cramer said. "I think that was a little more comforting."
