Dietetics education applies knowledge of food and nutrition to promote health and to prevent and minimize disabilities and the chance of getting diseases. Dietetics courses focus on healthy diets and healthy lifestyles for optimal wellness.
Undergraduate programs include Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS), Bachelor of Arts (BA), and Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Dietetics or Food Sciences. Degree programs are geared toward preparing students with foundations of knowledge, skills, and hands-on training in nutrition and dietetics. This knowledge can qualify graduates for entry level positions in schools, health centers, wellness programs, hospitals, clinics, government nutrition programs, and the food production and marketing industries. Undergraduate degrees also provide an emphasis on culinary aspects of food for those students planning to become registered dietitians and chefs.
Dietetics degrees in four-year institutions may require an internship of several weeks. Internships provide students with experience in administering and supervising food and nutrition preparation, counseling and consulting to health professionals, determining nutritional needs of patients, assisting in the prevention and treatment of inadequate nutrition, diabetic care, pediatric and geriatric care, dietetics in general medicine, and therapeutic menu planning and preparation.
Comprehensive professional nutrition training will prepare graduates for rewarding careers as dietitians in community programs, clinical and hospital settings, and as dietetic consultants, dietetics administrators, nutrition and dietetics researchers, and for public health service. Graduates may also choose to apply their Dietetics Education to positions as nutrition consultant, fitness consultants, and sports nutrition in fitness centers, health clubs, and gymnastics clubs.
The demand for graduates with dietetics education is growing as the public becomes more attuned to health issues and people spend more time and money on leisure. Incomes for professionals with dietetics degrees range from $30,000 to $65,000 annually.
