BOSTON If you like politics, you are going to love 2008.
The year will only be three days old when Iowa caucus voters hand the nation their verdicts on the presidential contenders, kicking off the GOP and Democratic delegate scramble, with New Hampshire holding its earliest primary ever, five days later.
After years of voting only after the party nominations are decided, Massachusetts voters may find themselves in the thick of the nominating process this year, having joined 21 other states in the Feb. 5 Super Tuesday primary elections and caucuses that could decide both party nominations.
Through the summer, party conventions and the final presidential campaigns, ads and stump speeches will keep terrorism, the Iraq War, immigration, Bush tax cuts, the mortgage crisis and recession fears in the news.
Whether voters are ready for it or not, members of Congress, state senators and state representatives also are up for re-election in the fall, and Bay State voters will be asked to decide a handful of ballot initiatives, including questions on dog-racing and decriminalization of marijuana.
All that campaigning will make for a noisy backdrop for what has become a contentious agenda on Beacon Hill, pitting House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi, D-Boston, and his supporters in the state House against Gov. Deval L.
According to state Sen. Edward M. Augustus Jr., D-Worcester, the bond would provide money for a $265 million genetic research facility at the medical school that relies on $175 million in state funds and $90 million in private funding. The bond also would earmark $6.3 million for the second and third year of operations for the stem cell bank.
Mr. Patrick does not understand the legislative process.
House Economic Development Committee Chairman Daniel E. Bosley, D-North Adams, whose committee put off consideration of the casino proposals in 2007, ended the year with assurances that the life sciences funding bill will come out of committee in January. Mr. Bosley has said the House will consider spreading funds out to a wider group of industries and that the committee is considering the addition of agricultural provisions to the funding plan to help Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University set up programs for small farms to genetically engineer plants for possible medicinal uses.
As 2007 ended, Mr. DiMasi and Mr. Patrick, whose disagreements highlighted politics at the Statehouse last year, also were going their separate ways on the presidential campaign trail. Mr. DiMasi stumped for U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., in New Hampshire over the weekend while Mr. Patrick took a high-profile role introducing U.S. Sen. Barack H. Obama, D-Ill., at campaign rallies in Iowa.
If Mr. Obama were to win the Oval Office, the governor said he plans to remain in his current post.
