Fayette County public school students participated in the 13th annual Kids Helping Kids food drive and donated 97,500 pounds of food to God's Pantry Food Bank.

The competitive drive is based on pounds of food collected per student at the elementary, middle and high school levels. All 53 Fayette County schools participated in this year's drive. Schools that collected the most food received awards.

First place: Clays Mill Elementary; School for the Creative & Performing Arts (middle school); Eastside Technical Center (high school).

Second place: Meadowthorpe Elementary; Beaumont Middle; Southside Technical Center (high school).

Third place: Cassidy Elementary; Southern Middle. There was no third-place high school.

Most improved: Booker T. Washington Academy and Morton Middle School.

A TASTY SHOPPING TRIP

Hate shopping when stores are crowded? Consider this: Holly Hill Inn in Midway is having its Holiday Lunch Bazaar on Wednesday. The historic inn will be decorated for the holidays, and Midway merchants will fill the dining rooms with great gift ideas. There will be food stations in each room and free gift-wrapping will be available.

Marjorie Diamond of Midway, who was a gift-wrapper for years at Lehman's, will supervise. Merchants include Damselfly, Wallace Station gift baskets, SoapWerks, Tater Knob pottery, 10,000 Villages, Amy Perry's Memory Bears, VS Hair Salon, Vicky Pidgeon's Irish cookbooks, and Stella Parks baked goods.

The menu for the roaming lunch, by chef/owner Ouita Michel, includes sugared and spiced nuts; cheese wafers; benne wafers; iced-tea punch; pomegranate cocktails; hot mulled cider; warm bourbon toddies; holiday canap s including Stilton mousse with apples and walnuts, Ann's organic radish and Rob's arugula tea sandwiches with lemon butter; smoked trout with Lisa's benedictine; cold roasted salmon; Mediterranean lamb meatballs in light tomato sauce; spinach feta orzo salad; Della Robbia wheatberry salad, and cookies and desserts.

NAMED TO CHEF PANEL

Bob Perry, coordinator of the University of Kentucky Food Systems Initiative in the College of Agriculture, has been elected to the board of overseers of Chefs Collaborative, a culinary organization for chefs that focuses on sustainability and buying locally produced food.Sunflower Sundries is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a holiday open house. The farm kitchen will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p. m. Dec. 1 and noon to 4 p.m. Dec. 2.

"The organic gardens are free to wander to see the gooseberry and black currant bushes and rhubarb patch," Jennifer Gleason said. "Soup made from the garden will be hot on the wood-burning stove along with corn bread, made from freshly ground cornmeal, from heirloom Hickory King corn, also from the garden. Our shelves are stocked with this season's jams and mustards and fine herbal soaps."

TEA AND A TEDDY BEAR

The Brown Hotel in Louisville is having a Teddy Bear Tea to benefit children's charities.

Santa Claus and Teddy Bear will be in the lobby of The Brown from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 8 and 15. Gourmet treats, prepared by chef Laurent G roli and his culinary team, will include peanut butter and jam sandwiches, a country ham sandwich with Wisconsin cheddar mayonnaise, hazelnut chocolate Nutella on brioche, chocolate brownies, chocolate chip cookies, double-fudge chocolate cookies, mini raspberry tartlets and petit sable. A selection of hot chocolate, soy milk and chocolate milk will be served.

A madrigal dinner is one of the best ways to get the holiday season off to a great start.
