SOME people laugh. Others shake their head in disbelief. But no one ever forgets the name of little Cayless Hindmarsh Mills.
In a bid to find the country's most patriotic Parra fan, The Daily Telegraph yesterday travelled more than 600km west to Moree.
And it was here, in a home awash with blue and gold, that we discovered a two-year-old tot named after club superstars Nathan Cayless and Nathan Hindmarsh.
Proud parents Jamie and Natasha Mills, both self-confessed Eels tragics , are primed for Sunday's finals blockbuster against Melbourne at Telstra Dome.
And so too, they say, is the little bloke whose name started out as a joke between Jamie and his mates at the pub.
From the moment I fell pregnant Jamie began going on about the name Cayless Hindmarsh, Natasha recalled with a smile.
It was supposed to be a joke. Something all the boys were talking about. But after nine months . . . at least the first part of the name was growing on me.
On October 22, 2004, in the small delivery room at Moree Hospital, naming their third son after two NRL tough guys wasn't such a joke any more. Suddenly it became a fitting tribute.
When Cayless was born he had a diaphragmatic hernia. He had a hole in his diaphragm, two holes in his heart and his large bowel, small bowel and spleen had all lodged in his lung, Mrs Mills said.
The newborn was immediately flown to Sydney in the CareFlight helicopter with mum, against doctors wishes, jumping on a commercial flight an hour later.
Cayless endured his first operation aged just three days, then spent a further four on life support and a week in the incubator.
That's why being named after him is such a huge honour, Nathan Cayless said from training this week.
We're still a little worried - we don't want Cayless copping grief at his 18th birthday because no one remembers the two has-beens he was named after.
It's probably lucky for Natasha that Fuifui Moimoi only played a handful of games that year.
Meanwhile, in enemy territory, Manly players looked to one of their toughest fans for inspiration.
Passionate Sea Eagles fan Alex Ma has lived with cerebral palsy for most of his 13 years and was once told he would never walk or talk.
He moved with his parents to China to begin herbal therapy - and made remarkable progress.
While at an international school in China, he managed to convert every one of his classmates into Sea Eagles fans. Now back in Sydney, Alex works daily with Manly training stuff, and can now walk without a wheelchair.
The inspirational teenager was part of the Sea Eagles preparations during their first final two weeks ago, when he led them out on to Brookvale Oval for their first final against South Sydney.
