We’re going to jump right into an important element of list building today--building a squeeze page.

A squeeze page is one term for it. You’ll hear other terms, such as an opt-in page, list building page, or a name squeeze page. Alex Mandossian calls it a “shy yes” page. There’s basically one major element to making this work toward building your list. It is a page on your website, preferably your home page, where the only purpose and option on the page is for people to put in their name and email address, so they can join your list and get more information from you on the topic. The second someone has done that, you're list building.

I’d like to give some examples. If you're a quilter, you might want to have a squeeze page where people put in their name and email address in order to be on your list so you'll send them the nine tips to double your quilting speed, or maybe get a list of quilting terms. “When you put in your name and email, you will get our weekly quilting tips.” They can be the most basic things in the world – the simplest, easiest things.

Or, let's say that you were in the military for many years. You might have a list capture page that says, "Put in your name and email, and each day I’ll email you with the latest installment of war stories from 1920, or war stories from WWI, WWII, and Viet Nam.” You only give them a couple of paragraphs, and leave them hanging right at an exciting point. That will encourage them to sign up for your list.

Here are some great ideas for list building for a great parenting site--seven tips to raising a healthy and balanced child, how to get along with your kids, discover the nine secrets to have a healthy, happy relationship with your children, or the six tips to improve any child’s nutrition. Do you think people will join your list to get them?

You can just make these up based on your experience and your opinion. It doesn’t have to be scientific fact. It just has to be something fun, interesting, and something you can squeeze right out of your head at a moment's notice. Don’t worry about whether it’s right or wrong. Don’t worry about whether it’s the best or not. Remember, it’s a website. You can change it instantaneously.
