Which yogurt would you rather put in your body: Dannon Light & Fit, artificially flavored, artificially sweetened, with 60 calories and 0 grams of fat or organic Stonyfield Farm soy, with 170 calories. 2.5 grams of fat and real peaches?
If all you care about is lowering calories, sugar and fat content, choose the fake stuff from Dannon. But if you care about the quality of ingredients, and you're able to balance your calorie intake just fine as long as you know what you're consuming, you might have a different answer.
"Eat This Not That!" (Rodale, $19.95) is a new book by David Zinczenko, editor-in-chief of Men's Health magazine. It's fetching a lot of good press including a bit in The Courant last week for telling readers the real scoop on what's in the food you buy, largely at chain restaurants. It is a real service to warn Starbucks
Eat This Not That!" bills itself as "The No-Diet Weight Loss Solution." It's a simple-minded view that's helpful for people who are just now, in 2008, waking up to the notion that sugar and fat are high in calories.
For anyone who already reads labels and uses common sense, or who believes natural and organic ingredients matter, the book's advice is lacking at best, and possibly deceptive.
