Arizona girl speaks about being trapped in mine

Rescue crews call it a miracle a 10-year-old Northern Arizona girl survives a 125-foot fall down an abandoned mine shaft.
It happened Labor Day weekend in Chloride which is about 20 miles north of Kingman.
Over a month after the accident we go back to the small town where little Casie Hicks tells her story and where some have launched a campaign to fill up the abandoned mines.
Casie hicks survived that fall, her older sister did not. Rikkie Howard, 13, died.
Chloride, Arizona is an old mining town, that about 300 people call home.
This is just another one of the 10,000 we have in this area, local Michael Hughes said.
Part of the lush landscape, according to Hughes, are death traps.
The dangers are untold and we just need to fill them in, Hughes said.
But the story of what happened to Hicks and her sister Howard, is a telling tale that people are talking about.
It was a pretty tough rescue, one rescuer said.
The accident happened when the girls were riding three wheelers and they somehow slipped down an unfenced shaft and hit the bottom.
Mohave County Sgt. Rob Mcuen was the first guy down the shaft.
I talked to her from the time I got down there 'til we loaded her up onto the helicopter and kept her talking about various things keeping her mind off the situation she was in, Mcuen said.
The rescue took about three hours.
Casie, investigators say was one brave young girl.
What was surprising to me was how calm she was there was no panic no crying, she was very calm, Mcuen said.
Cassie was pulled out and flown to a hospital in Las Vegas.
She hurt her spine.
She had cuts and bruises all over her body.
Michael Hughes isn't taking this lightly.
He said if he has to he's going to take his concerns all the way to the governor's office until these mine shafts are filled in.
And he's not the only one trying to change things out in Northwest Arizona.
Casie hicks is also stepping into to try and make some changes.
She may be taking small steps, but what Casie has overcome in the last six weeks, is huge.
I thought no one was going to find me, she said. I thought I was going to be there for a very, very, long time. After I fell, I passed out for a couple of minutes and then I woke up and heard whispering then didn't wake up 'til morning.
Casie was trapped for more than 12 hours after falling 125 feet and she said she and her sister weren't down there alone.
When it was morning I finally woke up and I could see light and then I turned my head and then I turned my eyes and I saw an owl and it said, whoo, she said.
A short time later, rescue crews pulled Casie out of the mine shaft and recovered her sister's body.
Terror, I was angry, I was hurt and I haven't been able to grieve for Rikkie because I've been trying to be strong for Casie, mother Caroline Booker said.
Casie hurt her spine. She was covered with cuts and bruises.
I have to have a cane and then I feel like an old woman, she said.
