Jon Hope is planning to change all that. A student of the game, Jon pays homage to the generation before him with his song crafting abilities and intricate lyricism. Raised in the hood while attending private school at the same time, Jon brings the best of both worlds to his music, and can never be boxed in by one style.
Now with all eyes on him, Jon Hope is set to capitalize off his recent successes and make himself a household name.

So tell us man, what's the hip-hop scene like in Rhode Island?
The RI Hip Hop scene is dope man. I think out here and pretty much New England it's very lyric driven. The artists out here really take their craft seriously. It's really all about the music and what each artist has to offer.
What was it like growing up there?
I had a unique childhood because I was exposed to so many different things. I lived in the hood, but went to a private school. So I hung out with the affluent as well as the hood niggas. I was very fortunate because my perspective on life wasn't narrow like most people who live in the hood. Basically, my whole crew, AGC, we always wanted to see more. I always say we were going 100 miles an hour in parked cars because our minds were traveling, searching for other things outside of our current situation.
When did you decide to get into hip-hop?
They s ay you need to be the change that you want. A couple years ago, I was watching an interview with J-Kwon (So So Def artist) and the person told him that his name rhymed with Raekwon (Wu-Tang) and the dude had no clue who Raekwon was. I thought it was disgusting. There was no sense of history. So, for some reason, I said I wanted to make a contribution to the game in some way shape or form. My contribution is through the music aspect of things. Just really being able to travel and share my thoughts with the fans.
"Breathin'" was hot, was that the joint that kind of put you on the map, so to speak?
Oh yeah! "Breathin'" is the foundation. That opened many doors for me. It's just my man and me Taktix (producer) having fun with it.
You're a lyricist; do you feel a lot of dudes are abandoning lyricism for commercial success?
Yo to be honest, I try to not worry about what other dudes are doing. I'm not really with that whole "Hip Hop Is Dead" movement because my hip hop isn't necessarily your hip hop. There are certain values that need to be upheld, but when you mesh art and business, the art is definitely going to suffer to some degree. Do I think people dumb down for success? Absolutely! But I can't sit here and be concerned with what the next man is doing. If he/she is doing it from the heart then I can't knock it.
Me personally, my tongue is my sword. It'll make a woman cringe between her thighs and make a rapper wish he never grabbed a mic in his life (laughs)
Were you happy with the response to, To Whom It May Concern?
I was definitely happy with the response. We got great reviews all across the board. Shouts outs to S Class!!
What was it like working with Devo Springsteen?
It was dope. He gave me insight on my music and how I can improve as an artist. It was much more than just the one record. He was also featured on my mixtape The Audacity osted by Statik Selektah.
You've been on stage with a lot of big dogs, what were those experiences like?
It's a true testament to hard work. I went from rapping in the mirror with my hairbrush to sharing the stage and being featured with people I admire. It's a great feeling.
Who would you say are some of your musical influences?
Man, it changes everyday (laughs). Scarface, Taktix, Nas, Kanye West, Redman, and Erick Sermon. I'm really starting to appreciate Jay-Z as well. It's more than music with him. In this day and age, you have to understand the business.
Is it a positive or a negative coming from a place that's not known for hip-hop?
I think it's a positive because I'm bringing a different perspective to the game.
You've been in a lot of magazines, when did you start to get the national recognition?
I started getting recognition once my first mixtape came out which is To Whom It May Concern. But as far as getting my name on the national and worldwide scene. I owe all of that to Statik Selektah and my girl Melanie.
You were on Statik Selektah's album, how was that?
Once again, it's truly a blessing. To be featured on an album with so many big dogs, it's crazy. The record 'Talk to Me' is a dope record that many feel is one of the hardest records on the album. It was a last minute addition to the record. It also goes to show that Statik just ain't no DJ, he really puts it down behind the boards as a producer. Statik Selektah is living proof that there are genuinely good people in this business. He's responsible for a lot of my success. I owe a lot to him man. We rock beyond the music tip too; just vibin watchin funny ass movies and shit (Shout out to my man Bam and the real Curtis Jackson from America Ninja).
The Audacity was dope, what did you want to get across to the fans with that?
That was the breakout for me. I had the co sign from the biggest DJ on the planet and it really brought on the same stage as the other rappers making noise like your Papoose, , Joell Ortiz,Termanology and so forth. It's pretty much showing the world that a kid from the smallest state in the world has the audacity and balls to make name in Hip Hop.
I think I'm doing a good job of that. Outside of Sage Francis, there isn't anyone making the impact that I am from Rhode Island. I'm just here to open the doors because there are many other talented folks where I come from.
What's your ultimate goal in hip-hop?
My ultimate goal is to have longevity in this game and be consistent with my music.
What projects can we expect to see from you in the near future?
Right now, I'm wrapping up my next project, which is called Somekind of Wonderful. It will be my first indie release. I'm also working with some familiar faces, but I don't want to speak to soon. I'm going to wait til they materialize. I'm also tapping into some things outside of the music. I secured a sponsorship deal with Hoodman.TV clothing. I'm also doing some voiceover work as well.
