KU observes Banned Book Week

The American Library Association calls it Banned Book Week. For eight days at the end of September and beginning of October, those interested in books come together and try to spread the message that it's not always so easy to find your favorite on the shelf.
"Today, we're talking about some of those books that have been on the list for several years, but many of us would consider to be classics," KU librarian Erin Ellis said. "When you get to college, at the university level, many of these are part of the curriculum here."
At KU Thursday, librarians gathered on Wescoe Beach to read passages from their favorite banned and challenged books with a clear message for those who walked by.
"Censorship of constitutionally protected speech, whether for protection or any other reason, violates the First Amendment," KU librarian Judith Emde said.
Among the books that were at KU on Thursday were The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison and Witches by Roald Dahl. Witches is often challenged for the same reasons that Harry Potter sometimes finds itself coming under fire. But The Bluest Eye contains mention of rape and pedophilia.
"These are characteristics of the human condition," Ellis said. "We all need to recognize this exists in our society and come to some understanding. You can do that through literature. That's a safe environment to explore those little aspects of the human condition."
Banned Books Week has been a theme at places away from KU as well. Area bookstores are promoting the week and featuring the books they have that have often been banned or challenged.
"We want to make all ideas available, all the content available," Ellis said. "Even though people might be uncomfortable, or find it questionable, the First Amendment guarantees our right to see and read this material, no matter what."
The American Library Association uses a very simple slogan for Banned Books Week: Free people read freely.
The Harry Potter series is the most challenged or banned set of books from 2000 to 2006. That's according to the American Library Association.
Other series slated to be banned on a regular basis include the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Catcher in the Rye.
