Boy shot in drive-by attack Friday, September 21, 2007

A teenage boy was undergoing an operation to remove a bullet from his arm after an apparent drive-by shooting.

The 16-year-old was taken to hospital after he was shot from a vehicle on Carlisle Street in Sheffield at about 9.30pm on Thursday, a South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said.

The boy was expected to have surgery to remove the bullet but the injury was not thought to be life-threatening.

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for information.

South Yorkshire Police said a 23-year-old man and a 15-year-old youth had been arrested in connection with the shooting.

A spokesman confirmed that the injured boy was taken to Sheffield Northern General Hospital for treatment.

Sheffield District Commander, Chief Superintendent Jon House, said the shooting was an isolated incident.

He said: "We are treating the incident very seriously, as we do in any gun crime, and a full investigation has been launched.

"We believe it to be a targeted attack and want to reassure the public that this type of incident is exceptionally rare, and that Sheffield remains one of the safest cities in the country."

He urged anyone with any information to contact the police in confidence.
