A new medical office building is taking the Wal-Mart approach to treating patients.

At the USF Health South Tampa Center for Advanced Health Care, patients will be able to see a doctor, get an X-ray or MRI, get a prescription and pick up their medicine all in one visit - and under the same roof.

The center opened Monday at 2A Columbia Drive, on the TGH campus.

The seven-story, 126,000-square-foot facility consolidates the USF Health offices previously housed in the nearby HarbourSide Medical Tower and the offices at 17 Davis Blvd. Now USF Health staffers, faculty members and students will offer outpatient services in categories including pediatrics, OB/GYN, general surgery, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, cardiology, internal medicine, and vascular surgery in the same building.

We really wanted to create one-stop shopping for our patients, said Rick Green, chief operating officer of the Center for Advanced Health Care. This gives us the flexibility to create a place for the patients to see all of our specialists in one facility.

Also included in the $33-million facility is a diagnostic imaging center, a Sweetbay Supermarket pharmacy, 94 exam rooms and 187 faculty offices. The center will use a $15-million electronic medical record system that is designed to be paperless.

USF s tradition of teaching its medical students at TGH also will continue in the center.

Green said the center has about 25 percent more square footage than the combined space at the Davis Boulevard building and HarbourSide Medical Tower. Still, he said USF Health will continue to occupy those locations. We hope we grow and have a need to maintain those facilities, he said.

The center is part of a TGH expansion phase that includes a new parking garage. The garage opened in April. Besides that and TGH s older parking garage, the new center offers free valet parking from the lobby.
