NORTH ANDOVER - Lembo's Marketplace left downtown a year ago, but its absence is still felt in Messina's Shopping Centre, where Pets Unlimited closed this week.
The pet store was the second store to close in the plaza since Lembo's - Video Island has been shuttered since last summer.
Tina Messina, whose family owns the plaza, said changes are part of transition as the CVS expands and construction begins to update the storefronts and redo the parking lot as part of a $6 million renovation.
But store owners said losing Lembo's was a major blow.
"We took a big hit when the grocery store closed," said Scott Wason, owner of Pets Unlimited whose last day was Wednesday. "That was the anchor store. The plaza was slow after that."
Many in the downtown area have requested that another grocery store be brought in to replace Lembo's, especially the elderly who live nearby and go downtown to use the Senior Center. For them, the store was convenient.
"A lot of people miss the market," said Jack Cecchinelli, co-owner of Today's Barber Shop.
The Messinas said they are trying to find another food store to put in, but it won't go where Lembo's was. That space has been torn down and will house a larger CVS with a drive-up pharmacy window.
Messina said the CVS will draw more business, as will other new stores. Those stores have yet to be announced and won't open until at least next spring after the CVS is built. When the CVS moves into the bigger space, the store it occupies now will be rebuilt as a different store.
"We are trying to find a second draw," said Messina. "We are in transition. When you are in transition, things slow down. By no means is it a dead plaza."
So far, no other stores have announced they are leaving the plaza. Some have been with the plaza for 20 years and plan on staying, including Clifford Jewelers and Today's Barber Shop.
Judy Normandin, the owner of Annie's Book Stop, said she would even be interested in expanding if more room was available at the plaza. She said the location has been good for the last 15 years and has drawn a steady crowd of loyal customers.
She has noticed less people coming to the plaza in the last year, though.
"The big change was when the grocery store closed," she said. "The construction is just temporary.
Wason said his pet store had other competition that also helped to drive him out of business. A Petco recently opened on Route 114, but he said he could have weathered that if the downtown plaza still had the draw Lembo's used to bring.
"We used to have a full parking lot here all the time," he said. "Everybody took a hit here."
The Messina Shopping Centre renovations are part of a bigger plan by the town to revitalize the downtown area to bring more businesses and more customers. The Planning Department recently completed a survey to see what changes residents want downtown.
Other changes for the area include renovations at the East Mill on nearby Water and High streets where stores and apartments are coming in, and plans to renovate the Bradstreet School into a new police station.
Jean Foley, manager of Clifford Jewelers, said change will ultimately be a good thing for the plaza when the renovations are finished.
"We are looking forward to it," she said.
