JESSICA KIUNGA The Prince Albert Daily Herald Herbs and prescription combos could be dangerous By Jessica Kiunga Herald Staff A local pharmacist says people need to be more aware about the risks of mixing prescriptions with some herbal medicine, which could cause serious adverse reactions. This comes after a recent Canadian Press report, which says the risks could be more serious than previously thought, because the reactions go under-reported. Roses Stewart, the owner of Victoria Square Compounding Pharmacy, stressed the importance of talking to your pharmacist and doctor before taking any kind of herbal medication while taking a prescription, but admitted not every pharmacist is highly knowledgable about herbs. A lot of us haven t really spend time researching what the impact is. Stevens said pharmacists at her location have a bit more training in the area, and though it s time consuming, will carefully go through the drug list of their customers to make sure they aren t headed for trouble. In her practice, Stevens said one of three people she consults has to change their medicine regimen because of the dangers ahead if they keep mixing herbs and prescriptions. They may not be in a medical emergency because of what they re doing, but were heading that way, she said. Stevens said part of the problem with herbals is they aren t regulated, so it s easy for people to grab up whatever s on the shelf and start taking it, even if it s a risky substance for them. She added people often don t take the power of herbs seriously enough, thinking that because it s herb-based, it s automatically safe, a notion she says is absolutely incorrect. Anything that you pop into your mouth should be considered a drug, she said. Stevens said people who mix herbs and prescriptions without talking to a doctor, pharmacists, or naturopath could be putting themselves at risk for complications like blood clots, other bleeding problems, or exacerbation of existing medical problems. She added some herbs can reduce the effectiveness of prescriptions. Stevens suggested that people who are considering herbal remedies should consult a naturopath, who are trained professionals in the area and understand the sensitive chemical balance they re dealing with. jkiunga@paherald.sk.
