BRATTLEBORO -- A local nurse is facing up to 20 years in jail and $100,000 in fines for allegedly faking prescriptions for pain killers for her own use.

Jennifer Gray, 26, of Hinsdale, N.H., is facing 10 felony counts of prescription fraud for calling in prescriptions while working as a nurse at Brattleboro Obstetrics & Gynecology, a practice on the campus of Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

Gray was arraigned in Windham District Court Tuesday morning and pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to court documents filed by the attorney general, Gray allegedly called in a prescription for Hydrocodone (Vicodin) on 10 occasions between November 2006 and May 21 of this year.

An investigator from the secretary of state's office first met with BMH officials in July. Officials said they learned from the practice manager at Brattleboro Obstetrics & Gynecology about the situation with Gray, whose LPN license was suspended.

The manager said a pharmacist at Walgreen's on Canal Street had noticed that someone named Jen from Brattleboro Obstetrics & Gynecology had been periodically calling in a prescription for a patient named Jennifer Gray.

Eventually, the pharmacist believed the caller was the same person.

The manager of Brattleboro Obstetrics & Gynecology reportedly looked into the matter and found that no doctor had ordered any Vicodin. Gray told the manager that the situation was a misunderstanding. Later meeting with hospital officials, Gray denied calling in the prescription, citing multiple excuses -- that the pharmacy confused her with someone else, that someone broke into her home in December and stole her prescription and that a relative who was recently fired could be involved.

Gray was suspended from working at the practice. She had worked as nurse at Brattleboro Obstetrics & Gynecology for about four years, according to the affidavit.

One of Gray's conditions of release is that she has to notify employers in the nursing field of her charges.
