Walgreen Co., one of the largest U.S. drugstore chains, Monday posted a 6.4 percent rise in May sales at stores open at least a year, leading one analyst to raise his earnings expectations for this year and next.
Total sales grew 10.7 percent to $4.58 billion as sales of prescription medications rose.
Same-store pharmacy sales increased 7.2 percent, while same-store sales of general, or “front-end” merchandise such as candy and cosmetics, rose 5 percent.
AG Edwards analyst Steve West said he expects “another strong third quarter.”
West raised his fiscal 2007 earnings per share forecast by 2 cents to $2.08 and his fiscal 2008 earnings per share view by 5 cents to $2.35.
“With both front end and pharmacy sales continuing to lead the entire industry, combined with stronger gross margins owing to increased generic sell through, the long term merits of this premiere retailer are more attractive than ever in our view,” West wrote in a research note. He has a “buy/conservative” rating on the shares.
Walgreen shares closed Monday at $45.23, up 10 cents.
