In the three years since Jason Mraz's second studio album, Mr. A-Z, came out, he settled into his San Diego digs, embarked on some personal worldwide travel and got a cat.
He also found time to come home to Mechanicsville at Christmas to visit his family -- whom he'll see plenty of this weekend while in town for a couple of concerts.
Mraz, for the uninitiated, burst through in 2002 with his debut release, Waiting for My Rocket to Come, and its Top 40 hits, The Remedy (I Won't Worry) and You and I Both. The album has since gone platinum.
His 2005 follow-up, Mr. A-Z, arrived loudly with a No. 5 debut on the Billboard 200.
But its two singles, Wordplay, a self-aware folk-pop tune about Mraz's admirable ability to deliver lyrics at a tongue-tying pace, and Geek in the Pink, an amusingly bouncy ditty, didn't inspire much buzz.
Now, he's readying the release of We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, arriving May 20. The first single, I'm Yours, is already starting to dent Billboard's Adult Top 40 chart.
Calling earlier this week from New York, where he was heading out to Broadway to catch August: Osage County, the 30-year-old Mraz chatted in his usual easygoing style about the new record, his current club tour and visiting his family.
Q. So, will you have some time to visit the homestead while you're here?
A. I will, I will. I'm staying with my grandma. She loves the company, and I get my own room there.
Q. Is it still cool when you go home, or is it kind of annoying when everyone who ever knew you wants to spend time with you?
A. It's not too bad. People seem pretty normal. I usually only stay with my family when I'm home, but I might take a walk down Cary Street to pick up that Richmond vibe.
And I always go to Mechanicsville Music, right by Lee-Davis High. I just kick it with Rick Alvey , the store owner. It's a good hang. I might answer some questions or take some pictures, but it's usually pretty chill.
Q. I know you've been playing live steadily, but why so long in between records?
A. The last record was written in hotel rooms and planes and was very much about Jason Mraz. I didn't want to do that for a third album.
I needed to live a little and enjoy being in San Diego. I wanted to get a cat. I wanted to start feeling like a grown-up for a few minutes. I didn't know what I liked anymore.
So I went backpacking around Europe a few times. I went to India. And through that, the new songs started to come out, and they weren't about me. They were about the world. About nature. About breathing.
Q. The new songs are pretty varied, style-wise. I'm Yours has a laid-back Bob Marley vibe, but then you've got a lot of Earth, Wind Fire-type horns on a couple of songs. Where did this inspiration come from?
A. It was just from finally chilling out in Southern California and being able to walk around my farm and know that I didn't have anywhere else to go.
We'd sit around at night listening to Neil Young and Bill Withers and Michael Franks. We'd surf every morning and tend the garden and play with the cat. We started our own community, like the Laurel Canyon thing of the'60s and'70s. We is Mraz and Billy Bushwalla Galewood, Mraz's roommate and current tour mate.
I never left the performance scene. I just stopped selling tickets and announcing that I was going to perform. I played a local coffee house in San Diego every Sunday and developed the songs that way.
Q. What's going on with your personal life? Are you seeing someone?
A. I am. I was two years as a single man, but this New Year's in San Diego, one of my best girlfriends reappeared and there was a new chemistry. We had a New Year's party and we danced all night. It was just in step.
Q. So tell me about the live show. Are Bushwalla and Justin Kredible openers or do you all perform together?
A. We do all perform together, but the show does exist in three acts, all hosted by Justin, who's a magician. Then Justin transitions into Bushwalla, which we all participate in, and then there's a transition to my set.
It's clean. It's perfect for the family. It's full of juggling. It really is all about entertainment and bringing down that wall between the stage and the crowd.
