The specific approach depends on the dosha, but in general you need to follow the Daily Lifestyle Regimen and diet for your constitution while increasing your intake of foods that enhance your digestive fire. These include ginger, papaya, mango, pineapple, bitter melons, and dark, bitter greens.

You also need to reconnect with your inner self and your present life. Ask yourself, How do I feel? What weight do I want to be? Am I hungry for something other than food? If you are not satisfied emotionally or psychologically, you need to look at that—are you using food to fill a void that is best taken care of in other ways? Are you nourishing all your senses? Dr. Thomas has found that using therapy that attends to all five senses is a magical approach to weight loss. In addition your body needs relaxation and oxygen—these two nutrients are essential to achieving balance, so be sure to practice yoga, meditation, and pranayama (breathing exercises) daily.

And finally, exercise, exercise, exercise, using the form that is most beneficial for your dosha. Vata types need movement with a gentle pace, such as tai chi, many forms of yoga, and perhaps a light amount of dance aer¬obics and resistance training (weights). Pittas do best with challenging and vigorous hikes surrounded by green nature and blue skies, and competitive sports. Kaphas require very vigorous activity, such as running, dancing, hiking, swimming, triathalons.

HERBAL REMEDIES FOR OVERWEIGHT
The following herbal remedy is recommended for all three doshas; its taste leaves something to be desired, but the unpleasantness is worth it because it really works wonders:

• Combine 1 part each chitrak (Plumbago zeylonica) Pippil, medopachaka, and trikatu; take 1/2 teaspoon with a mouthful of warm water, swish around your mouth, and swallow. Take this once a day if you are 20 pounds overweight or less; take twice a day if you are more than 20 pounds overweight. Can take with honey. Can get these at Dr. Helen s' site.
