Schools and vermin have been uneasy companions for generations, much to the annoyance and disgust of humans.
Infestations of ants, mice, bees, wasps, rats, flies, cockroaches, centipedes, millipedes, silverfish, spiders, beetles, bats and other creatures that are attracted to food, damp cement, old wood and crumbling masonry appear regularly wherever old buildings with cafeterias exist.
Such has been the case with Clarkstown North High School's recent problems with roaches and other critters.
But most people are first introduced to school vermin issues through a letter home that says that head lice have been discovered in their children's elementary school.
Such was the case during the past month in at least two of Rockland's eight public school districts, though representatives from all eight said they saw isolated cases of head lice every fall, this year included.
"We've had head lice in the district this year since September. It's a nuisance," said Kathy Spiro, school nurse at South Orangetown's W.O. Schaefer school. "No epidemics, just an isolated case. It seems like September is so-called head lice month. I can't imagine there isn't a school in Rockland that hasn't had a case of head lice since school started."
Clarkstown's Laurel Plains Elementary School has sent home at least two letters telling parents about individual cases of head lice; Nyack's Liberty Elementary School this year had an outbreak that at its worst affected 31 students and a teacher.
Liberty's lice problem began small, with one or two cases first noticed at the end of September. By Oct. 25, the district was in full action mode, sending home information on everything from identifying head lice to eliminating them. Though a single third-grade class seemed to have more cases than other classes, the lice and their eggs - called nits - had spread to other classrooms as children infected their brothers and sisters.
"We had a few early cases and were very, very proactive" about handling the issue as the numbers started to increase, interim Principal Ellen Rechenberger said.
Every child was checked, every teacher, administrator and staffer were looked at by nurses at Liberty. Children with the telltale white specks were sent home until they could be treated with over-the-counter remedies.
"We had extra nursing staff check kids - we have 491 kids, that's not an easy task," Rechenberger said. "We have enhanced our cleaning staff, invited the Health Department to talk with our PTA, sent home several letters. We have a lot of families that live together and get together in other arenas like the Nyack Center. We were proactive about communicating to other places."
Right now, the district has about five active head lice cases at Liberty. Those children sent home for the most part have returned after a school nurse checked them to ensure they really were lice-free. The district checked many of the affected children Friday and will check the rest today to catch any re-infestation, as lice hatch about a week after eggs are laid.
The district has requested that affected children and families stay away from large gatherings of people to keep re-infestation to a minimum. And with luck, the lice will be no more than a bad memory by Thanksgiving.
There are two thoughts about head lice treatment from a school's standpoint: sending children home or letting them remain in school.
Nyack has a "no-nit" policy, requesting that any child identified as having lice stay home until the problem has cleared up. South Orangetown, however, lets affected children remain in class provided they are being treated. The district checks affected children daily and checks all other children in the class.
"There's absolutely no disease associated with head lice," Spiro said. "We checked the Web sites of The Harvard School of Public Health, and they support not having a no-nit policy. Children were missing a tremendous amount of school. Since there's no disease - the worst-case scenario is a secondary infection from scratching - with the cooperation of parents and nurses, we have been able to keep it under control.
"Every once in a while you will come across a time (that things get out of hand), but in my 22 years of school nursing," she said, "probably twice have we had it where it's really been a nuisance.
