CLARKSVILLE -- With construction expected to begin as early as this spring on Beebe Medical Center's South Coastal Health Campus in Clarksville, residents and local officals are curious as to how the building and the facility will affect them.
State Senator George Bunting (D-Bethany Beach) and State Representative Gerald Hocker (R-Ocean View) held a "town meeting" at Millville Fire Volunteer Fire Company Monday as a chance for people to learn more about the new Beebe campus and have a few questions answered.
One of the biggest questions we get is what is Beebe doing in Clarksville," Hocker said.
With more and more people relocating to the area, the goal of the future 60,000 square foot, $2.8 million facility located off Route 26 is preparing for the future, coupled with a desire to improve current Beebe services in the area.
"We've recognized with the growth down here that we haven't done as good a job providing services as we would have like," said Jeffrey Fried, President and CEO of Beebe Medical Center, who gave a presentation and fielded questions at Monday's meeting. "We're excited for the project because it really is going to do a better job meeting your needs ... The facility has really been designed since day one for future expansion."
When South Coastal Health Campus is completed -- which officials expect before summer 2009 -- the building will have two floors, with plenty of thought given for expansion. The building is designed to add a third floor in the future or as demand requires, with sufficient land to expand further as the community continues to grow.
The second floor will host physician offices, while the first floor will be the home of currently existing Beebe services in the area: An emergency center, walk-in primary care, Beebe Imaging, Beebe Lab Express and Beebe Physical Therapy.
While most of the other services will be available year-round, the emergency department will only be open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, as the emergency center in Millville currently operates.
"Right now there doesn't seem to be enough traffic to require year-round services," Fried said. "We do have limited resources. It needs to get to a point where it makes the most sense (to go year-round)."
Many of the same services already operate in the nearby area, but now they will be relocated in one state-of-the-art facility with "significant improvement in the services provided for the community," Fried said. However, the building will allow for aqua therapy, more outpatient services, more doctors and the potential to add patient beds in the future.
"We've come light-years as far the services that are provided," Bunting said. "To me, that's one of the positive results of growth."
Fried compared the interior layout of the building to the Beebe facility on Route 24, but said from the outside South Coastal Health Campus's "therapeutic design" which utilizes "natural materials" will look fairly different from any of their other facilities.
"We're really working hard to take advantage of the natural beauty of that location," he said. "It doesn't look like a medical facility. It doesn't look like any of our other buildings."
The project will be funded through grants and loans, hospital equity investments and a $6,000 capital campaign.
Bunting and Hocker said that Beebe is currently working with the Delaware Department of Transportation regarding the future Route 26 expansion.
