Free massage, what could be a better way to relax? Thursday, Sept. 6 and Wednesday, Sept. 7, UIC Campus Programs thought exactly that and provided chair massages as part of their East/West Lounge Series. By hiring the services of Campus Recreation Massage Therapy, Campus Programs was able to give students a break from the stresses of starting a new semester.
"Our program is designed to cater to the campus community and enhance their health and well-being by helping to decrease and alleviate life stress," explains Kim Rostello, Associate Director of Programs at Campus Recreation and a Licensed Massage Therapist. "Massage increases relaxation and decreases muscular and emotional tension. Massage can also help to manage pain created by the constant repetitive stress that we place on our bodies."
Recent studies have revealed a strong association between massage therapy and health improvements. According to the American Massage Therapy Associate (AMTA), studies have proven that massage therapy can sooth chronic back pain, boost the body's immune system, reduce anxiety and lower blood pressure in stroke patients, ease post-op pain, reduce headache frequency, ease alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and even decrease pain and anxiety in hospitalized cancer patients. A survey completed by the American Health Association in 2003 said that as many as 82 percent of hospitals have chosen to incorporate massage therapy into their pain management programs. The therapeutic benefits of massage continue to be researched, with sponsorship for many of the studies coming from the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine.
"Massage is no longer a luxury, it is now a necessity that can soothe aches and pains, and also facilitate the body's own healing powers," explains Rostello.
There are many different types of massages and techniques that can be used by a therapist to give a client a desired outcome, with Swedish massage and deep tissue massage as the most common. Swedish massage is a system of long strokes, kneading and friction techniques that concentrates on the more superficial layers of the muscles, while deep tissue massage concentrates on the deeper layers with slow strokes and deep finger pressure. Many therapists also choose to include trigger point therapy into their massage. This is the combined finger positioning and pressure into certain points in the muscle and connective tissue to reduce hypersensitivity, muscle spasms and referred pain patterns.
The University of Illinois at Chicago's Campus Recreation offers flexible hours for individuals to schedule a 30- or 60-minute massage appointment with a licensed massage therapist. In addition to providing individual massage therapy services in both facilities, Campus Recreation Massage Program will also visit offices and departments to provide chair massages for large groups. This semester they have not only helped Campus Programs, but also provided their services at the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs. Research has shown that massage benefits employees in the work place "by reducing stress and improving performance," according to AMTA. More and more companies are recognizing these benefits for their employees and choosing to integrate massage into the benefits received by their employees.
