If you suffer from painful erections and are having difficulty during intercourse you may suffer from Peyronie's disease. Fortunately Peyronie's treatment can be treated. Let's look at how to establish treatment that meets your goals for this painful disease.

You main goal of treatment for Peyronie's disease is probably to keep yourself sexually active. Learning more about this diesease can certainly help in deciding how to treat it. At this time the jury is still out on the effectiveness of drugs for treating Peyronie's disease.

That does not mean you should not try this as a treatment. In the long run. however, surgery is the one proven way to treat Peyronie's disease. Because the course of Peyronie's disease is different in each patient, and because some patients experience improvement without treatment, it is suggested waiting 1 to 2 years or longer before attempting to correct it surgically.

During this time you may be willing to undergo experimental options to treat the disease. There are a few different types of experimental treatments for Peyronie's disease. They include:

- In some small-scale studies, researchers have given oral doses of vitamin E to men with Peyronie's disease and have reported improvements. Yet no controlled studies have established the effectiveness of vitamin E therapy as a standard Peyronie's disease treatment.

- Inconclusive success has been attributed to oral use of para-aminobenzoate, a substance belonging to the family of B-complex molecules.

- Radiation therapy, in which high-energy rays are aimed at the plaque, has been used as a Peyronie's disease treatment method. Like some of the chemical treatments for this condition, radiation therapy appears to reduce pain, but it has no effect at all on the plaque itself and can cause unwelcome side effects.

- Researchers have tried injecting chemical agents directly into the plaque associated with Peyronie's disease. These agents have included:

- Steroids, such as cortisone, have produced unwanted side effects, such as the atrophy or death of healthy tissues.

- Another Peyronie's disease treatment method involves iontophoresis. This is the use of a painless current of electricity to deliver verapamil or some other agent under the skin into the plaque.

Peyronie's treatment as you can see is not an exact science. What works for some may not work for others. This shows the importance of being open to trying things to see what will work for you. Ultimately you may end up having surgery but keep your options open first.
