The group of wounded veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afganistan were set up with different adaptive ski equipment last Thursday, day one of the Vail Veterans Program at Golden Peak. Many of the veterans had come straight from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washinton, D.C., to ski Vail for the first time.

On in his second day, when Cpl. Ray Hennagir had graduated to blue runs, he found a relatively open section of a black diamond run. After some turns through powder, Hennagir found a little too much speed, lost control and crashed. When his instructor came up to him and told him he needed to slow down a bit, Hennagir looked up and said,
Saturday, after the group posed for a picture outside of the Golden Peak Lodge, Hennagir got geared up and took one run off the bunny slope at the request of his instructor. Then, it was over to the Vista Bahn high-speed lift, where Hennagir calmly moved around skiers and made his way into the tight lift line.
From the top of the Vista Bahn lift, he got a push or two from his instructors to keep speed along the catwalk feeding out onto the Avanti run. After some smooth turns on flatter terrain, he moved through a steeper pitch and when it flattened out again, he made a sharp turn and came to an abrupt hockey-like stop. A few turns ahead, he took a small spill, brushed it off with a smile and headed down to the Avanti high-speed lift.

Army Spc. Bryan Wagner, 21, gets the hang of skiing powder on his second day on a monoski on Vail Mountain as part of the Vail Veterans Program. Wagner, who had been out of the hospital a week when he arrived in Vail after losing his right leg from the knee down while serving in Iraq, hoped to get back on a snowboard as soon as possible.

Sgt.
