THEY disappeared without a trace, leaving their loved ones with nothing but memories and countless unanswered questions.
It is every mother, father, husband or wife's worst nightmare, to wave goodbye to a loved one realising that it may be the last time they'll ever see them.
Another 600 people will disappear today and they will join the 230,000 - almost the population of Southampton - reported missing in Britain every year.
In Hampshire alone, 4,605 people have been recorded as missing by police so far this year - more than 500 a month.
The vast majority return home safely, often within a few days, but some don't.
As of the start of October, 74 people have been missing for more than 12 months - while 34 of those have been untraceable for seven years and are still missing.
Today, we open Hampshire's "Missing Persons File" to look at ten of Hampshire's most high-risk unsolved cases.
Perhaps the best known case is that of Damien Nettles, who mysteriously disappeared from West Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, on November 2, 1996.
The 16-year-old left for home from a party at 10.30pm with a friend, but when they went their separate ways home, Damien turned back from his route to his home in nearby Gurnard and headed back into town - no one to this day knows why.
The last positive sighting of Damien was on footage from a CCTV camera in Cowes High Street where he was seen walking alone up and down the street laughing to himself.
The disappearance was totally out of character, but it was left to his mother, Valerie, to scour the Island in search of her son. Police concluded he had run off or slipped drunk into the sea, but she didn't believe them.
One person claimed to have seen him on the mainland, another in Salisbury, but none of the sightings have transpired into anything. His family has since moved to the United States for work, but they are still waiting for some sort of closure.
In the 11 years since Damien's disappearance there have been many more cases just like his - but with one big difference.
In 1996, smiling faces of missing strangers would stare out from milk cartons or lorries and the World Wide Web was in its infant stages. Now, the Internet has become a key element in finding today's generation of missing people.
After dialling 999 to alert the police and ringing all their friends, worried families log onto popular social networking sites in hi-tech bids to find their loved ones.
Within days of the disappearance of Hampshire schoolgirl Rosemary Edwards, pictured right, appeals for information were posted on Facebook and MySpace.
After just four days one Facebook group appealing for everyone to look out for Rosemary had more than 2,000 members from across the country. The group was set up by Joanna Forsyth, of Westbourne, in Dorset, despite not knowing Rosemary or her family.
Hundreds of readers - including Rosemary's family - posted messages on the Daily Echo's website, along with photographs and video clips. Sadly, Rosemary's body was discovered in remote woodland in the New Forest two weeks ago.
Missing People has embraced the Internet too, recently launching an online Missing People Map and Missing People TV - which brings together content such as video appeals together in one place.
Spokesman Brian Cowan said: "We have profiles on all the main social networking sites, which enables us to publicise our organisation and create support networks for the families.
"They enable us to engage our supporters and to publicise missing and unidentified people, while sites like YouTube enable the charity to promote our audio-visual content and that of the families of missing people. We also produce age progressions for long-term missing cases, and image enhancements for unidentified and missing cases."
The charity is working on 6,000 active cases and reunites ten missing people a week with loved ones. However they know some people just don't want to be found.

You can visit their website at www.missingpeople.org.uk Jeffrey Moore Age at disappearance: 37 Jeffrey disappeared while on a hiking holiday in the Austrian Alps. He set off from the mountain resort of Heiligenblut early on 25 August 2003, but was later reported missing when he failed to return to their hotel.
Despite intensive searches done by mountain rescue teams, there has been no sign of Jeffrey.
Jeffrey, from Portchester, is an experienced climber. He is very fit, trained in first-aid and would have taken all the necessary provisions and safety equipment for the mountain hike. He 6ft 2in, of slim build, with brown hair and blue eyes.
Dinah McNicol Age at disappearance: 18 Dinah, from Southminster in Essex, has been missing since 4 August 1991. Prior to her disappearance, Dinah, who was 18 years old at the time, had been to the Liphook festival in north east Hampshire.
On the last day Dinah told her friends she was going to Portsmouth; it is believed that she was going to hitchhike. Dinah has not been seen since.
Between 8 and 26 August, Dinah's cash card was used in Hove Havan, Brighton, Portslade, Margate and Ramsgate. Each time 250 was taken out. However, despite extensive enquiries, there has been no news of Dinah since.
Dinah is 4ft 10in, and when she went missing was slim with long black hair, green/grey eyes and a pierced nose.
Paul Balmforth Age at disappearance: 27 Paul, from Dibden Purlieu, was 27 when he disappeared. He was last seen leaving the Grosvenor Casino, Southampton at 11.25 pm on 8 February 2000. Paul told the doorman he was going to jog home, however he did not arrive and there has been no sign of him since.
At the time of his disappearance Paul was working at Asda in Southampton and writing a novel, the manuscript of which he had with him when he went missing. This has not been found.
When last seen Paul was carrying a black bag which contained his work clothes as well as his manuscript. Paul is 5ft 9in, slim with an athletic build. He has red hair and a small scar over his right eye.
Jacqueline Windsor Age at disappearance: 24 Jacqueline has been missing since 13 April 2006. Last seen in Basingstoke, there has been no news of Jacqueline since and her current whereabouts remain unknown.
Concern is growing for Jacqueline's welfare as it is believed that she may be unwell. Her mother is extremely worried and urges Jacqueline to get in touch with someone to reassure her that she is safe and well.
Jacqueline is 5ft 2in, medium build with blue/grey eyes and shoulder-length brown hair that she usually ties back in a ponytail. Although it is not known what Jacqueline was wearing when she went missing, she usually wears trainers and glasses. Jacqueline has a tattoo of a red devil on the back of her left shoulder and a heart on her upper right arm.
Stephen Goble Age at disappearance: 32 Stephen, from Southampton, was last seen leaving his place of work in Basingstoke on 20 July 2000. Although his car was found abandoned in Dorset several days later, Stephen has not been heard from since and his current whereabouts are unknown.
Stephen had just started a new job at a computer software company. He is a very fit young man who enjoys Judo and running. Stephen's disappearance is completely out of character as he gave no indication to his friends or family that he was anxious about anything.
Stephen is 5ft 5in, of a stocky build with short black hair which is receding and a fresh complexion. He normally wears metal-framed glasses.
Andrew Steeds Age at disappearance: 34 Andrew has been missing since 27 February 2006. Last seen on the Isle of Wight, he is believed to have gone to Southampton later that day where he called his family saying that he was going to return home to Bristol. Andrew has not been heard from since.
His family are extremely worried that something has happened to Andrew and are anxious to be reassured of his welfare.
Andrew is 6ft 1in with blue eyes and light brown hair. When he went missing he was wearing a black leather jacket, grey trousers and brown shoes.
Andrew Chellew Age at disappearance: 32 Andrew has been missing from his home in Kings Worthy near Winchester since 15 October 1997.
Although his car was found near to Beachy Head in Eastbourne shortly after he disappeared, there has been no sign of Andrew since. It is possible, however, that Andrew could be in Bournemouth.
"I have to believe he left his car there to throw people off the scent. He wanted to change his life and I think the only way he believed he could do that was by cutting off all ties and getting his head straight," his mother told the Daily Echo in 1998. "He was too strong, too determined to throw himself off a cliff."
He is 6ft 2in and is of athletic build. He has blonde hair and blue/green eyes.
Alan Hale Age at disappearance: 60 Alan, who is better known as Yorkie, has been missing from the Portsmouth area since 15 March 2004. At around midday, Yorkie left hospital in Cosham, but failed to return home. He has not been seen or heard from since.
There is great concern for Yorkie's wellbeing and we are anxious to know that he is OK.
Yorkie is 5ft 5in with shoulder length grey/white hair, brown eyes and a number of Royal Navy tattoos on his forearms.
When he was last seen, he was wearing a knitted patterned jumper, green pyjama top and jeans.
David Eddowes Age at disappearance: 68 David, who lived in Seaview, Ryde, on the Isle of Wight, has been missing since mid-August 2002. Well-known locally, David could regularly be seen riding around on his mountain bike. However, David has not been seen since and his bicycle has been left at home.
David is 5ft 6in, thin with longish grey hair and a grey moustache. He has a deformity on the left side of his face and his eyelid droops.
Damien Nettles Age at disappearance: 16 Damien went missing after a night out with friends on the Isle of Wight when he was just 16. Damien, who was living with his family in Gurnard at the time, went missing on 2 November 1996. He was last seen at around midnight walking along the High Street in West Cowes shortly after buying chips.
Sadly, his family have had to move to the USA for work since his disappearance but they are still hoping to hear news of Damien. His grandparents still live on the Isle of Wight.
Damien is 6ft 3in, with brown eyes. When he was last seen, Damien was of slim build and had brown hair.

It is of course a deadly serious subject and the amount of human suffering, anxiety and pain generated by these disappearances can hardly be imagined. For me it's been an eye-opener, the sheer scale of what's going on. It's profoundly disturbing and the Echo cannot be praised too highly for bringing the issue so prominently into the public gaze.
