Washington State junior swimmer and former San Luis Obispo High standout Elyse Peterson finished eighth Monday in the women s 100-yard breaststroke at the Toyota Southern California Grand Prix at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
Peterson finished the event in 1 minute, 3.43 seconds. She was also 10th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.17, 39th in the 50 freestyle (24.73) and 44th in the 100 freestyle (53.18).
Peterson is 0.3 seconds away from an Olympic Trials cut time in the 100 breaststroke. The trials are in Omaha, Neb., on June 29.
In relays, Peterson was part of Washington State teams that took second in the 400 medley relay and third in the 400 freestyle relay, respectively.
The San Luis Obispo Swim Club also had a trio of competitors at the event Mia Schachter, Patrick Neil and Kendall Swanson.
Schachter, 13, represented Puma Aquatics and was 33rd in the 100 freestyle (53.18).
Neil was 58th in the 200 backstroke in 1:59.84, and Swanson finished 68th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.8.

USC freshman star O.J. Mayo violated an NCAA rule by accepting free tickets from Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony to an NBA game, but his punishment won t include missing games.
University officials said they have been informed by the NCAA that Mayo committed a violation and must contribute $460 the total value of the two tickets to a charitable organization. USC said in a release the NCAA restored Mayo s eligibility after he and his family donated the money, making him available for to-day s game against Oregon.

Former major leaguer Chuck Knoblauch still had not been served with a subpoena by federal marshals as of Friday afternoon, four days after a House committee investigating steroids in baseball issued a demand that he testify at a deposition and a hearing.
Knoblauch, a four-time All-Star who played for the Yankees, Twins and Royals from 1991-02, originally was asked to appear last week for what was supposed to be the first of five depositions or transcribed interviews scheduled by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
Those sessions are in preparation for a hearing Feb. 13, when the witnesses are scheduled to include seven-time Cy Young Award winner Roger Clemens and his former personal trainer, Brian McNamee.
When the committee didn t hear from Knoblauch or a representative, it issued a subpoena to force the 1991 American League Rookie of the Year to submit to a deposition next Tuesday.

Sarah Burke needed a big second run to end Grete Eliassen s run as ski superpipe champion a year ago. A fall on her first run left her in the same position this year at the Winter X Games.
Burke pulled it off again, shaking off her early wipeout with a stellar second run that earned 92 points more than 10 ahead of silver medalist Mirjam Jaeger.
I thought I better get the second run, the 25- year- old Canadian said Friday. There s definitely a lot of pressure. I just listened to some music and relaxed.
In slopestyle, it wasn t much of a surprise when three- time champion Shaun White put together a 95- point run to lead qualifying. What did catch everyone off guard was the poor performance of Danny Kass. The 2001 superpipe champion and three- time slopestyle medalist finished last out of 20 riders. Cheryl Maas led women s slopestyle qualifying with 87.66 points.
