Anxiety Medication

Medicines help relieve anxiety and depression. Anxiety is a state of mind in which you constantly anticipate something bad. This psychological condition requires special attention when it starts to affect the normal daily life of a person.

Anxiety disorder is usually considered a psychological disorder showing certain physical symptoms. Modern research finds that brain biochemistry is an important factor contributing to this state of mind. Amygdala and hippocampus are the anxiety-initiating parts of the brain.

Treatment of anxiety is generally based on the nature of the anxiety. Generally, there are six types of anxieties: panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, simple phobias, posttraumatic stress disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Diagnosis of the disease is mostly based on the physical symptoms. Several questionnaires have been developed for the assessment of this disease.

Anxiolytic medicines are a common remedy suggested by physicians. Benzodiazepine is a common anti-anxiety dug. Beta blockers such as propanolol are effective in treating some anxiety disorders. Diazepam (Valium), lorazepam (Ativan) and alprazolam (Xanax) are also commonly used to treat general anxiety disorders. Azipirones such as Buspirone are used to treat generalized anxiety disorders (GAD). Etrafon, Triavil, and Limbitrol are commonly used to treat panic attacks. Clomipramine is prescribed for obsessive and compulsive disorders. Inderol is recommended for symptoms of phobias.

Some common antidepressants are also effective for curing anxiety disorders. Selective serotonin uptake inhibitors such as fuoxetine, sertraline, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, and citalopram are anxiolytic. Tranylcypromine and isoprocarboxazid are also common monoamine oxidase inhibitors used to control anxiety disorders. Phenelzine is used in cases of panic disorder and social phobias.

Medication actually helps rectify chemical imbalances. Medicines should be taken only under the guidance of an expert physician. You should be wary of the side effects of antidepressants. Some medicines develop a self-tolerance requiring a continuous increase in dosage.
