Hill s drowning ruled accidental; more tests set


The death of New England Patriots defensive end Marquise Hill, who fell off a jet ski in Lake Pontchartrain near New Orleans, was ruled an accidental drowning on Tuesday. An autopsy found no signs of drug or alcohol in Hill's body, although more tests are planned and will take two weeks to complete, said Orleans Parish coroner Dr. Frank Minyard. Minyard said Hill might have suffered a mild concussion when he fell off the water craft. ...

Authorities have a search warrant to look for as many as 30 dog carcasses on property owned by Michael Vick that is at the center of a dog fighting investigation. But the warrant has not been executed. In a news release, Sheriff Harold D. Brown said the warrant issued May 23 has not been executed at the request of Brown and Surry County Commonwealth's Attorney Gerald G. Poindexter. The release did not say why the two officials leading the investigation into possible dog fighting made the request.

Powell runs 9.97 to win 100 meters

World-record holder Asafa Powell won the 100 meters Tuesday with the fastest sprint in the world this year. Powell led from start to finish to clock 9.97 seconds in his season-opening return from a bout with knee tendinitis at the Artur Takac Memorial meet in Belgrade, Serbia. Iveta Lalova of Bulgaria won the women's 100 in 11.26 seconds, followed by Mikele Barber of the United States in 11.27 and Sherika Williams of Jamaica in 11.34. ...

Florida State junior Walter Dix (Coral Springs) was named USA Track and Field's Athlete of the Week after setting a collegiate record in the men's 200 meters Saturday at the NCAA East Regional in Gainesville. The Southeastern Conference opened its annual spring meeting with talk about adding an early signing period to college football.
