Beginning with the 2007-2008 school year, students will not be permitted to share homemade foods in Somonauk schools.
The Somonauk School District Board of Education on Monday approved the student handbooks for the high school, the middle school and James R. Wood Elementary school. Among the changes to the handbook will be a stipulation that homemade foods cannot be shared in the classroom.
Superintendent Susan Workman said the decision was made for the safety of students with food allergies, an increasing condition among students. Only packaged items, which are clearly labeled for people with allergies, will be allowed for treats.
"We thought before there was an incident, we should move forward (with the change)," she said.
In other action, the board: Set the driver education fee schedule for this summer and the 2007-2008 school year at $100, an increase of $50 from last year's fee. The district applied for and received a waiver from the Illinois State Board of Education to charge more than the $50 maximum allowed under the school code. Awarded a bid to repair a section of the roof at JRW where water is leaking in. Anthony Roofing will perform the work this summer for $189,727. Employed Emily Thompson, part-time music teacher at the middle school and part-time aide in the early childhood program; Stephanie Ricke, speech pathologist; and Jim Farrell, varsity girls basketball at the high school. The board also agreed to use Kishwaukee Community Hospital to provide an athletic trainer for the 2007-2008 school year. Accepted resignations from Victoria Wegner, high school math teacher; Terri Swanson, high school secretary; Heather Pinter, payroll and record secretary; and Lorri Allen, speech pathologist.
