US sends Guantanamo prisoner who tried to kill himself to Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia over the weekend, his U.S. lawyer said Tuesday.
Al-Dossary, who served as an imam for about six months at a mosque in Bloomington, Indiana about seven years ago, holds dual Saudi citizenship and has family in that country, according to his lawyer, Joshua Colangelo-Bryan.
The U.S. government confirmed his release in court documents filed Monday in Washington.
Colangelo-Bryan said al-Dossary was taken into custody by Saudi officials after a reunion with relatives in Riyadh, the Saudi capital.
In October 2005, Al-Dossary slashed his arm and tried to hang himself during a break in a meeting with Colangelo-Bryan. The former chief medical officer at Guantanamo said in court papers filed a month after the incident that the detainee had undisclosed mental health issues, had often refused to take medicine or cooperate with therapists and had attempted suicide 10 times.
The United States has released more than 400 Guantanamo detainees, most of whom were later released by their home countries. The U.S. now holds about 360 men on suspicion of terrorism or links to al-Qaida or the Taliban.
