Teen Given Wrong Medication By Pharmacy

ELKRIDGE, Md. -- An Elkridge mother is upset at a local pharmacy after she realized they gave her son the wrong medication.

"I am so thankful it's not a fatal mistake," said Nadine Schafer.

According to Schafer, a doctor prescribed her son, Steven, Adderall to treat his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder on Oct. 9. She had the prescription filled at a Rite Aid in Elkridge.

Schafer said Steven took the medicine for the next 14 days, but then she started getting alarming phone calls.

"School has been calling me saying, 'Your son is on drugs. He's thrashing out and he's sleepy. He's just not the Steven that we know,'" she said.

At closer inspection, Schafer discovered that her son hadn't been taking Adderall.

"I happened to look at the bottle. It had his name and address and to take one capsule a day. Then it said it was for another medicine," Schafer said.

It turned out that the pharmacy paid close attention to drugs Steven is allergic to -- butalbital, caffeine, acetaminophen and codeine. On the prescription bottle, Schafer noticed that the pharmacy filled the prescription for those four drugs, which are a substitute for fioricet, a pain medicine to treat headaches.

"I called the pharmacy and said, 'How could this happen?' They said, 'We put the wrong pills in your son's bottle. Come up and we'll fix it,'" Schafer said.

Rite Aid officials told WBAL TV 1 News I-Team reporter Lisa Robinson that the pharmacy staff apologized, immediately asked if the child was alright and offered to refill the prescription at no cost. They said they refunded the money, and that they're taking the mistake as an opportunity to retrain the pharmacy staff in that store.

Schafer filed a complaint with the Maryland Board of Pharmacy, who would not comment on the case but said it would look into what happened.

"In this case, we will investigate and ask for a root cause analysis, and either take formal action or informal action once we find out what caused the errors," said Laverne Naesea of the Board of Pharmacy.

"They can say I'm sorry, but sorry isn't enough. They need to get their act together and get this straightened out so it doesn't happen to another child," Schafer said.

The Board of Pharmacy said it investigates complaints as soon as they get them. Usually, there will be a determination within 90 days.

Schafer said her son's principal told her that Steven is back to his old self.

The Institute of Medicine said that at least 1.5 million Americans are sickened, injured or killed each year by medication errors. Those mistakes can be in the prescribing, the dispensing or the taking of medicine.
