DID YOU KNOW?
Viewers may have trouble recognizing Jennifer Ehle ("The Russell Girl" co-star) the next time they see her.

As part of its "Complete Jane Austen" project, PBS reruns "Pride and Prejudice" on Feb. 10, 17 and 24; Ehle starred in it 13 years ago, under period clothes and a brunette wig.

As soon as Amber Tamblyn heard about "The Russell Girl" she was intrigued.

This was a chance to play a grown-up, a college grad on her own in the city. For Tamblyn - 24 years old and fresh from playing teens - that's a start.

"There just aren't enough roles out there for a woman," she says.

And there was a flip side to the character, Sarah Russell. As the movie (Sunday, on CBS) begins, she receives devastating health news and retreats to her family and a cocoon of denial.

"There are a lot of childlike moments," Tamblyn says.

Such complexity - the woman-child in crisis - doesn't come along very often. But this is a "Hallmark Hall of Fame" movie, which means extra depth.

"The Russell Girl" starts with Sarah receiving the health news stoically. "You, as an audience, go, 'What's going on with this woman?"' Tamblyn says.

She goes home to her parents (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Tim DeKay), but tells them nothing. Still, this is hardly the place to duck problems.

Something happened years ago that left the neighbor woman embittered toward Sarah. "It's an interesting character," says Jennifer Ehle, who plays the neighbor.

Their scenes set off a rich contrast. On one side is the young actress, stepping into one of her first grown-up roles; on the other side is Ehle, 38, who already has two Tony awards.

"Actually, I think Amber has done more work (on camera) than I have," Ehle says.

That's true. Tamblyn - the daughter of "Twin Peaks" actor Russ Tamblyn - joined the "General Hospital" soap opera at 12, half her life ago. She starred in CBS' "Joan of Arcadia," which she calls "the right character, at the right time"; she made two "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" films, "The Ring" and more.

Ehle, by comparison, has had sporadic film roles. She's from a theater family; her mother, Rosemary Harris, has been nominated for eight Tony awards, winning once.

"I think the first time I saw her in theater was 'The Seagull,"' Ehle recalls. "I drew a little notation in the program, every time the subway went by ...

"I had no idea that most 10-year-old girls didn't see 'The Seagull' and make notations about the subway."

Ehle is an American, but studied drama in London, in her mother's native land. She's done several of her films there, including a notable one: In 1995, she and Colin Firth starred in a classic, miniseries version of "Pride and Prejudice."

Still, she's stayed mostly in theater.

"I spent all of last year in a very close, loving group," Ehle says. "Doing three, three-hour plays for nine or 10 months can be a great experience."

That was in Tom Stoppard's "The Coast of Utopia." Ehle won her second Tony; the first was for a revival of Stoppard's "The Real Thing," seven years earlier.

When that finally finished, she was ready for a change of pace. "I was just curious about doing television again," she says.

This is not ordinary television, of course. Each year brings only three "Hallmark Hall of Fame" movies, which emphasize complex characters.

I was a big fan of Amber Tamblyn when she was Joan of Arcadia. That was a fabulous show, and I was devastated when it was cancelled. It was especially heartbreaking, because they never really had a finale and just left all the storylines hanging. I was excited to see Amber would be in a TV movie on Hallmark. However, when I heard it was another one of those medical dramas where someone is dying, I was disappointed. I hate those kind of movies, so I won't watch it.
