Mumbai, Feb 13 Mr Raj Thackeray was arrested today on the charge of instigating people and fomenting trouble sparking violence by his angry supporters in Mumbai and a few towns in Maharashtra in which a HAL employee died when stones were pelted at a staff bus.

Mr Thackeray however walked free a couple of hours after the police moved in to arrest the leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Samiti leader from his Shivaji Park residence at 4.15 p.m. amid tight security when a magistrate in Vikhroli granted him bail on a personal surety of Rs 15,000. Mr Thackeray (39), who appeared calm, was driven in a normal police vehicle.

The police action ending days of dithering by the state government came hours after nearly 2,000 preventive arrests, mainly of MNS activists, were made across the state with personnel from the Rapid Action Force and central paramilitary forces keeping a tight vigil.

Mr Abu Asim Azmi of the Samajwadi Party, who also faced similar charges like Mr Thackeray, was also arrested from his Colaba home but granted bail by a magistrate

In Nashik, the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Mr Ambadas Haribhau Dharrao (55) was killed in stone-pelting allegedly by MNS activists near Adgaon, the police said. The bus driver was injured and has been admitted to a hospital.

Mr Thackeray was slapped with an FIR by the Mumbai police two days ago for promoting enmity among regional groups after his provocative statements against North Indians.

Incidents of stone pelting and damage to property, both public as well as private, have been reported from Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune and Parbhani as well, the state police control said.

A couple of MSRTC buses were stoned at various places in Nashik, the police said, adding 15 persons were injured.

The MNS activists also tried to set ablaze a Maharasshtra State Road Transport Corporation bus at Deepali Nagar on Mumbai-Agra national highway. A bus coming to Nasik from Mumbai was also stoned this evening, injuring its driver. Several shops also downed their shutters.

In Mumbai, the police arrested over 150 MNS activists protesting the arrest of Mr Thackeray.

Shopkeepers have pulled down their shutters and there were reports of office-goers leaving for their homes early fearing violence.

The police said at least ten calls, a majority of them from the north-west suburbs, of stone pelting have been received from various pockets of the city and efforts are on to get details of each incident.

The deputy commissioner of police (Zone XI), Mr Makrand Ranade, said, a couple of best buses were targeted by a mob at Dahisar and many of them have been arrested. In Navi Mumbai, a mini-bandh was witnessed as many establishments were closed.

The police made preventive arrest numbering 1,800 people in various parts of the state to prevent any untoward incidents in the aftermath of their arrests, the Director General of Police, Mr P S Pasricha said.

The Chief Minister, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh said the police has taken the correct step in arresting Mr Raj Thackeray.
