Trade Show Offers Buffet for Hungry Entrepreneurs


All you ever wanted to know about running your own business will be presented under one roof during a two-day event at the Vancouver Convention Centre this weekend.

The National Franchise and Business Opportunities Show aims to provide the education and resources needed to arm would-be entrepreneurs and business owners with the necessary tools to make it in the business world.

The largest franchise exhibit in British Columbia, the event showcases close to 70 franchise booths and includes daily free seminars that offer advice and direction from business experts.

"The show is both full-scale franchises and business opportunities, along with some that are part-time and home-based as well," says Fred Cox, president of National Event Management, the Ontario-based company that produces the show.

"So if someone s either fully ready to commit to owning a full-scale franchise or they re just thinking about getting into their own business for the first time, this is a great place for them to see all of those options."

Some of the participating exhibitors include Baskin Robbins, Pizza Pizza, the UPS Store, PostNet Canada, Cora s Breakfast and Lunch, Herbal Magic and Your Dollar Store With More.

The seminars are free and led by experts who give advice on everything from how to get started in business to the legal aspects of owning a franchise. Government officials will be on hand to offer information on how to secure government contracts.

"You can learn how to do business with the government from both Revenue Canada s perspective and Industry Canada, so you can learn about all the resources that are available from the government and also how to make sure that you re properly registered and taking advantage of all the services that they offer as well," says Cox.

Seminar topics include how to choose and evaluate a franchise, understanding government regulations, Revenue Canada requirements, marketing, sales, human resources, legal considerations when buying a business, and lease negotiations.

"We also have seminars on financing your franchise," says Cox. "So if people are wondering about financing options, about who may be able to help them invest in a franchise, there are financial institutions at the show."

Cox wants to make it clear that the speakers are not in the business of selling franchises.

"These are services that are going to help people and give them advice and assistance in finding a business that s right for them. So it s valuable information that you can take with you as you meet the exhibitors and see what your next step is in your career."

Cox notes that as Vancouver has grown, so has the show. In its ninth year and with an expected attendance of 2,000 people, the weekend event "is going to be our biggest show from an exhibitor perspective."

"As Vancouver has grown over the last decade we ve been on a nice steady growth curve where more and more exhibitors want to take advantage of the growing population and growing infrastructure in Vancouver," says Cox.

"We ve always found that the people of Vancouver are quite entrepreneurial."
