Runner driven for distance

Check out the winners' lists from area road races in the past few years, and you'll find Tanner Trotter's name.

He's made a name for himself among local runners, especially with his third-place finish in the Myrtle Beach Marathon on Feb. 16.

Trotter finished the 26.2 mile race in 2:34:16, a personal best for the Coastal Carolina University student. Running an average pace of 5:53 per mile, he finished less than six minutes behind winner Garick Hill of Winston-Salem, N.C.

"I felt so euphoric the day of the marathon," he said last week after a speed workout at the CCU track. "I was so surprised. I was so happy."

So happy that he was dying to go run the next day, but thought better of it and settled for some aqua jogging in the pool instead.

He plans to run his next marathon Nov. 2, the ING New York City Marathon. A longer-term goal is qualifying to compete in the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials.

While he has cut back some on his mileage since the Myrtle Beach Marathon, he still ran about 60 miles last week and this week.

"I got up to about 120 miles per week during training, and my knees started saying hello," he said.

A Conway native, he is the son of Doug and Lisa Trotter. He got interested in running in ninth grade, and ran track and cross country throughout his years at Conway High School.

At Coastal, he is majoring in physical education with a minor in exercise physiology.

He ran track at CCU for a short time before he had to stop training to heal from a foot injury. He then decided to pursue long-distance running instead of track.

When he's not in class or running, he juggles several jobs, including working the desk at CCU's recreation center, and he'll return to the SeaFarer in Surfside Beach as a server soon. He's also been working at Hibbett's at Inlet Square.

He has other interests: He plans to play intramural soccer at Coastal, and he's helping start a table tennis club.

But he has no doubt about his real love: "Running is really my main thing. I just feel good when I run. I love running as it is, and competing is a bonus."

It's a bonus he's good at. He won the fifth annual Rotary Club 10K (6.2-mile) race with a time of 32:54 two weeks before the marathon. And two weeks before the Surfside Beach run, he won the 25th annual North Myrtle Beach Winter Run 15K (9.3-mile) race with 50:32. He won the Healthpoint Turkey Trot 5K (3.1-mile) race at Brookgreen on Nov. 17 with a 15:59.

In September, he won the SOS 5K Beach Run in North Myrtle Beach with a 16:50.

At the Blue Crab Festival in Little River in May, he set a 5K course record of 16:30 - breaking the record of 16:42, which he also held.

In addition to his running, he does core- and leg-strengthening workouts, and he swims. He tries to eat a healthful diet heavy on fruits and vegetables, and he and his girlfriend, Margaret Viner, estimates he takes in about 5,000 calories a day.

Here's Trotter's advice for runners who want to improve:

"Don't overdo. It's so easy to get injured. At any sign of injury, take off one or two days instead of losing two weeks or more later."

"Use what helps you, and that's different for every person." He tells of an area runner who recently told him how his race times had improved since he adopted a vegan diet.

"Don't stop loving it. Just love what you do."

A friend working in New York vacation home, I am not proud to show off his test in New York under the license. Because in the United States, New York driver s license is almost the most difficult examination. Examination, not only to high-speed road to traffic, but also because of the scarcity of parking spaces in New York, the examination must be able to safely stop into a before and after about 10 cm of the parallel parking spaces, in the country, for many elderly drivers The families are demanding, therefore, even though the United States is called on wheels countries, and New York was only about 25 percent of people with driver s license, no driver s license proportion of Habitat America in the first place. Of course, this with the New York population density, traffic congestion, transit developed directly related.

According to reports, from around the world to the United States, a considerable number of people in the former country of residence will be the driving test cars in the United States but has repeatedly and defeated. A substantial component is to develop the habit of driving the United States do not meet the driving rules of the game. Do not learn basic things, the flow in the United States, the country very fast speed accident prone. Examination of the traffic arrangements in a wide range of environmental, Main Street, business and residential areas, the crossroads of the traffic lights, no lights at a crossroads, and various sections of the speed limit. Some people in the United States to learn to drive summed up the basic experience Specifically, the first is the Yaotouhuangnao the second is left right LAB hope , and the third is carefully stop signal.

Yaotouhuangnao is the driver turning, changing lines of action must be done, right turn, left turn; left turn, right turn. On the line about change, we must change the direction of looking back, as long as these movements are not driving, examiners will be demerit points, but rather the movement back, because of inertia old drivers often forgot to do so. I hope right LAB left, referring to the drivers head and eyes when driving response, not too stiff, rigid and driving an apt will be demerit points, it was described, within eight seconds to a rearview mirror eyes sweep. The third is the STOP stop signal, the signal to stop in the United States indicate licensing throughout the streets, on the road to stop licensing, three seconds after the order to go forward, but many people repeated examination of this loss is to eat, as long as that before and after Nobody around no car, followed not mistaken, certainly passed.

In many countries, no large-scale basic driver training schools, learner drivers can spend money to a private coach. In the United States, usually through the traffic rules examination may get students driver s license, as long as there are people with official license was accompanied on the road by car. And the very few countries in the examination venues only coach on the road without actually. (Author Zhang Zhiliang)
